MRP takes 14hrs to finish

For what it's worth, our Vantage 8.03.405A system used to take over 16 hrs to do full MRP Regen, until we split SQL 2005 off onto its own box & linked the servers with 1Gig fiber connections. Both servers have lots of horsepower, but the SQL box has more 'spindles' in the hard drive arrays than I've ever used in a Microsoft server before.....it also has AMD quad quad-core processors, 32G of RAM, & it runs very well. Our full MRP regen went down immediately to around 8-9 hours by just doing this, and we also 'tuned' SQL quite a bit with Epicor's help. YMMV, but this has been the BEST thing for us, stability-wise and overall performance. I can now also run 3 simultaneous MRP full regens at the same time on the APPLICATION server without saturating it...or, even causing CPU utilization to bump over 50%. If you ask Epicor for help, see if you can get either Ben Nixon or John Friend to help you....John did a stellar job on our system.

Cheers,
Gary

Hello all, we are running Vantage 8.00 on a SQL server DB, and it takes around 14 hours to finalize MRP. Any clue of what can we check?
How many jobs is MRP creating and scheduling? Are you scheduling
finitely or infinitely? What type of server are you running? Do you run
a regenerative or a net change? How many levels deep and how many
assemblies is your average job?

Our MRP process (which included MRP/Calculate Global Scheduling
Order/Global Scheduling) took about that long. We threw the server we
bought in our implementation (the one Epicor recommended) in the trash,
bought a real one and it cut our time by 2/3...

Some other side notes, we make sure to firm as many jobs as possible
before MRP runs as it won't mess with firm jobs (why recreate and
reschedule them), of course this assumes you run a regenerative MRP and
then global schedule afterwards.

In short, don't short yourself on plain old horsepower. With our new
server this allowed us to bring forecast into play and with a
regenerative MRP followed by the other two we

Create and schedule 2,500 to 3,000 jobs in about 6 hours.

Hello Rob, thanks for your feedback, here's some more information about our scenario:

MRP generate about 9,000 suggeted jobs
it Run Finitely,
the server has the following characterisitics:Â Dual Quad 3.6, 8 Gb Memory, running Win2003 Server R2 with SQL Server 2000, Vantage 8.00.809G
Always run it as a Regenerative
Average levels and assemblies are 2

We have a plan to replace the server in the 1Q of next year. but rigth now as the way it is i am looking for a way to speed it up, because is not logic to have that time on a MRP process, i will say that it is something with the Parts setup.  I am looking into that but any help anyone can provide will be more than appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
 Salvador Ahumada

I don't know if you can implement all of these changes with 8.00 (vs. 8.03), but the SQL performance tuning guide's suggested changes improved MRP performance and stability considerably for my 8.03.405 system.

Giving MSSQL as much memory as you can helps.

I'd turn on detailed logging and see if there are any obvious issues with particular parts, jobs, etc.
