All of our top level units are Non-Stock configured parts and are placed
on sales orders on a daily basis with the "Make Direct" box checked. We
have orders well over a year in advance and run MRP 7 months out. MRP
will generate Unfirmed jobs for the manufactured parts and PO
suggestions for the purchased parts through the cutoff date for MRP. It
is not necessary to firm up jobs for MRP to create demand. Just ensure
that every part has the Process MRP box checked even if it is a
purchased part. Also ensure that every part has a buyer and that every
product code has a planner (don't know if that would keep MRP from
creating demand but it is best to have both of those). Note: for some
reason MRP uses the planner from the Product Code versus the Part.

Are the manufactured parts you have entered on your sales orders
flagged as "non-stock" items ??

If they are then these are treated as "make direct" by the system and
you will not see purchasing suggestions until such time as the jobs
have been firmed and MRP has then been run a second time. Where the
parts on your sales orders are for stocked parts you will see the
requirements in the buyer work bench immediately following the first
run of MRP. These inventory jobs do not need to be firmed first.

I hope this makes sense and I am correct in my assumption...
