New Vantage User - Crystal Report Question

You can not connect to Vantage by reading the database files as you will with MS Access or text files. You have to setup and use and ODBC connection. Epicor has a very helpfull ODBC kit they will be happy to send you.
Good luck,
Jeremy

Subject: [Vantage] New Vantage User - Crystal Report Question

Hello everyone,

I am new to a company using Vantage, this is my first time with the
software.
I do have some experience with Crystal Reports so I have been asked
to get up to speed on writing Crystal Reports for Vantage data, and
become our local guru.

Here's my problem - after much searching I cannot find any database
files that Crystal is able to recognize! So where are they?

I know that each company's specific path to the DB's will be
different, but they should all be found in the same sub-
directories. So can someone please help point me there?
Also, if you can tell me what "type" of files I should tell Crystal
Reports to be looking for.

Thanks for the help,

Geoff McCuen

There are two ways to get at the data.
1. Using the .DBF files that get created by standard Vantage Crystal reports and located on the user's PC in the work directory. These are highly limied in fields available to use and require running the Vantage report first (at least to preview it).

2. Using ODBC to connect to the database. This is probably what you need. Do you have ODBC installed and running as a service on the server and connected to the database? If not check the Epicor site for the document for using ODBC. If you are using an older version of Vantage (like say 4.0) the ODBC programs and process will be a lot different than current versions using Progress 9.1d.

There are actually two places that Crystal pulls from. When reports such as
Sales Order Acknowledgement, Purchase Orders etc are run Progress creates a
little data base in the Vntgwork folder on your C: drive to generate your
report. For building Crystal reports from scratch you need to have the ODBC
drivers installed and configured on your local machine and ODBC set up and
configured on your Vantage server.
