No servers available - Any ideas other than licensing?

I believe this is an app server issue. they're all busy. check you app servers and ensure they are not being used by other periodic processes (mrp is a big culprit) - worst case - increase the number of app servers

Good morning,
For the past couple of days We are receiving no servers available errors  more often than in the past.  Does anyone have a suggestion what else we can look at?  Epicor admin tools indicate we have free licenses so licensing does not seem to be the problem.
Thanks in advance,
Karen

What version are you on, Karen?

We are on 607a, and have had this issue on and off since May.  Had support engaged since then, Including Ben Nixon.  Doesn't seem to be any 1 thing that causes it.  What we have noticed is it is a combination of processes running at the same time.  User File access is a big part of it, as Epicor has it tied to the PatchFld table.  Then we have noticed that Journal tracker, RMA processing, Invoicing, and other processes contribute to it.   It brings our system to a crawl for about 30 minutes each time it happens.  We are in the process of testing the 702A upgrade to eliminate this.

As mentioned above, there are several things that could cause this.  If it's a new situation, I'd look strongly at possibly the bad BAQ option.  If you have a new dashboard or process that you've just started running, it could be causing app server threads to run out of control.

If you take a look at Epicor's performance tuning documentation, I think they recommend one app server instance for every three Epicor users.  You can configure the Initial, Minimum, and Maximum setting for how many app server instances you want to have start on the Epicor905 app server.  The Maximum is what you are bumping against.  If you're just experiencing activity growth, increasing that Maximum number should resolve your problem.  If you have a broken or runaway process, increasing the number will just buy you a little time until it happens again.

I'm tempted to say that the default Maximum value is 20 which, by their suggestion, should handle about 60 users.  Epicor will start up the Initial number of app server instances and then spin more up or down based on the Minimum and Maximum values as needed.  There has been some discussion that setting all three values to the same (the Maximum value) will offer better performance at the cost of always consuming memory on the server even if it isn't "needed".

One other possibility could be that you have not yet hit the Maximum number of app server instances, but the server does not have enough available memory to spawn a new instance.

Well, this is strange.  I'm not sure I've seen this before and I have been following this thread this morning.  What, did Karen send out some juju here?  All of a sudden I had two users get the same error. I got in to Vantage without any problem and it was fairly speedy (I guess as speedy goes in Vantage) , so I had them close out and reopen Vantage. Came back fine and they are happily working again.

I would still like to see if someone does come up with something a little more definite.  But since like I said, it doesn't happen often (oh, why did I sat that??), I wasn't super concerned.  We're on 8.03.405.

Ha!  No problem Karen! :)

I somehow think the users here just butt heads on a locked file or accessing something because they both got the error about the same time. I'm pretty happy with it being a very few and far between thing here (knock on wood and spray my juju repellant).  Just makes it a little tougher to track a cause that way.

Check you max servers setting on your Main or PrintServer.  Check the broker log to see if it is trying to spool up more than you are allowing it to.

Are you using replication and replicating large amounts of data?  If so when replication is deleting data from the replication table, that causes the ‘No Servers  available’ problem.

Try decreasing the lease time for the App Servers. Also, check your available memory when the App Servers are maxed out, it's possible you're running at our memory which is causing the App Servers not to release properly.
