ODBC Programs

Troy,

You're right - there is a little hump to get over when it comes to the
"software culture shock", when using OpenOfficeOrg. But I think that's
because it's so close to MS Office - not because it's so different. I have
used it for 3-4 weeks and haven't looked back (once or twice at the
beginning). I'm finishing up my report to the Senior Staff on converting to
OpenOfficeOrg right now (written with OpenOfficeOrg). I like it better in a
lot of respects than Word. But yes, you do need to "get a feel for the
controls", and it isn't Word or Exce.l But in my opinion, that isn't
necessarily a bad thing. It's a serious contender - don't overlook it. It
has worked great for me and some others here so far.

Gary

I tested OpenOffice a few times with Presentations and did maybe two files
with it, but when it came 'crunch time' and had to get some documents out
real quick I jumped back to Word. I haven't fiddled with it since. I still
think it's a viable option for 'some' of our workstations, but we wouldn't
completely replace MS stuff with it for sure.

Troy and Wayne,

My ws isn't set up for Vantage ODBC. Yeah, it looks like there is a setup
for it in OpenOfficeOrg.

So far, how to you like OpenOfficeOrg? I and several others have been
using
it for a few weeks now. Generally, it's fine. Some like it, some find it
awkward at times. We're using Text Editor and Spreadsheet. I think
having
our own in-house user group, once I roll it out, would make it easier.

I haven't found anything yet that would really get in the way. Are you
finding decent documentation and tech support online? I haven't had time
to
go out there and look yet. I tried the user group from the link on
OpenOfficeOrg web site - didn't seem very good - mostly developers, not
users.

How are you dealing with issues like:

- other email to replace Outlook
- macros
- expanded document formats not reading into MS Word
- cut and paste has to be tweaked sometimes
- formats not translated properly (loss of large fonts) when document
sent as email attachment sent from the document itself

Any other things you've noticed?

We are now looking at our data via ODBC. Currently we are using MS
Excel and running the query. Does anybody have a good alternative to
Excel that would do the same thing? Something that doesn't have the
MS cost attached to it?

Did you purchase Crystal reports in order to modify your standard forms? If
so, why not use it to create/run queries? Just a quick thought.

Yes! I just checked it and was pleasantly surprised to find it in there.
