{Off topic} Star Office

The only compatibility issues I've run into are with Excel macros. Star Office can read the spreadsheet, and as long as you don't touch existing macros, it can save the document so Excel can still use the macros, but if you convert the macros to Star's format, you can't go back to Excel with it.

I've used Star Office 5.2 both at work and home. It's a great product and you
can't beat the price. Very similar functionality in Word Processing,
Spreadsheet and Presentation software when compared to Office 2000. In fact, I
felt their "wizards" (they call them AutoPilot) were superior to Office.

I tested compatibility between Word, Excel and PowerPoint (not exhaustive
testing mind you) and encountered no problems.

And, you can't beat the price!

I loaded it up on the home 'puter to check it out. Excel & Word
compatibility seem to be good. Some of the fancy stuff, like VB based
macros & code, I'm not sure about. I'd like an Access compatible DB
product too, but haven't figured that out yet. Looks like you need some
add-ins (Adabas?)

My biggest gripe is that it uses its own deskop / explorer like
interface. I think they were trying to have cross-platform consistency in
the UI. But I'd really like to bypass it, and just launch directly into
the app.

I need to procure a manual or two, and spend some more time with it. If
you know of any good online sources, I'd like to hear!
