Showing my boss the gun I just made would be handy right before my next review.

Good Day:

This company may be going to use 3D printers to supply parts for  ( any?) gun in 5-days.

Gun is made from Stainless Steel and there was no machining.

Their point was to show the precision of Manufacturing Grade 3D printers and software.

Also, the “Metal has less porosity then castings”.

NOTE: when you click on the link, it opens in a different window, so you have to click on it.

So, Could we ‘Print” a transmission tub, or even just a plate – with NO Porosity.  How long would it take = stock no castings?  Or use 3D printing to make the casting?

Has anyone purchased one yet?

What was your application?

I have been researching one for part prototypes and possibly creating simple Go, No-Go type manufacturing gages. I’m focusing on precision and tolerance capabilities. It’s a wild technology, any and all comments welcome.

Our pattern shop has a Makerbot.  It is a smaller version and they use it mostly for making pieces for the patterns.  It is a pretty slick piece of equipment and we are definitely looking into other ways to use it.  Depending on what you are using it for, the tolerances are pretty good I hear.

Brenda,

Thanks, Makerbot is one of the manufactures I’m reviewing.

Our Engineering Manager says:

It's the best tool I've ever had. I can make prototypes quickly, greatly improving the time to market. I can make assembly tooling, actual production parts and inspection guages. It's a Dimension U-Print.
