Vantage - Off Topic - Shop Floor Printers

I think I posted this before, but there are some really good deals all over
the web (and possibly with local toner shops), on reman HP laserJet III's.
They're big and heavy, but they are also workhorses that will keep humming
forever. I have seen them go for between $50-$75....

HTH,

Paul
I'm hoping I can get some feedback from the group here. I'm looking at
replacing an old dot matrix printer on the shop floor with an ink-jet
printer. I'm curious if anyone has used an ink-jet in a manufacturing
environment. I'm curious how durability and ribbon versus ink cost has
affected your opinion on using such a printer.

Thanks in advance,

We are dumping all inkjet printers wherever color is not required and using laser printers. When I did a study of the per page operating cost of laser versus inket (those inkjet cartirdges are budget killers) found that even with the higher purchase price for laser they paid it back in a relatively short time. They also last a lot longer. I think because the shop floor grit, grime and dust that coats everything gets on the paper and contaminates inket print head nozzles. Lasers tend to be a bit more enclosed, especially on the paper path. They also depend more on rollers and not at all on the back and forth motion of ink jets. I prefer laser printers with an enclosed paper drawer as opposed to the ones with a stack of paper sticking out the top. My latest favorite is the HP LaserJet 1200 for about $400. The cartridges are about $60 (twice the cost of inkjet but do 5X as many pages). And it is super fast compared to inkjet. I liked it so much I bought......one for myself at home.
Just my couple cents on printers.

Dave:

We replaced dot matrix in our shipping/receiving area with a LaserJet 6L 4-5
years ago--we use it to print our UPS labels, shipping log etc. It is oily,
dusty, greasy, hot, cold and so on. Other than cleaning the pick-up roller
about twice a year, no problems. It's a lot cheaper per page to use Laser
than ink jet, because the lasers last so much longer...I have a couple of
4Ls that are 10 years old and still humming along. The refills for the
ink-jets are so costly per page, plus if there's a chance the page could get
WET you are sunk!

My opinion,

Lydia

I agree with Todd.

I wish the people here would listen. The inkjet printers are cheap but the
cost to operate is huge. We purchased 24 cartridges, over $700, in December
and they are already gone. That would have paid for the LaserJet and a few
replacement cartridges, not to mention the laser quality higher.

Hi Dave,

We use the HP laserjet 1200 on the shop floor.
It works great. It is easy to use. It handles the paper well.
It is not too expensive.
We bought them with extra memory. We have had no problems.
They were easy to install. They work well with Vantage forms.
The toner cartridge is easy to replace. Our shop is dusty and
the printers still work well.

Good luck,

John Mansfield

Dave,

We are a pipe fabrication shop with lots of grinding and welding
No open top, paper feed, printers of any kind.... too much access for dirt

No ink jets for shop paperwork because....
extremely high cost of operation after initial purchase
ink runs instantly when hit by any fluid
That print head moving back and forth on a lubricated bar is a guck magnet

Also a big fan of the HP1200
We have several

With the low life and high cost of ink cartridges these days, I'd say a
LaserJet is the only way to go for b/w printing in most if not all
businesses. In fact, I'm considering dumping my $100 epson c60 at home and
going down to staples and getting a $250 laserjet 1000 for myself, as it
will be cheaper in the long run.

We've got numerous HP Laserjet 1200's thru 5000's in our shop and office,
they have served us well.
