[Off Topic] Backing up Clients

As far as administration goes, its much easier to give them a specific spot
on your server (i.e. Share) for your users to put their files on.

There are many advantages to this, one being ease of backup. Then if the
client computer hard drive fails ... Just replace it and install the O/S and
never worry about the data on it.

Of course you then have to make certain to train your employees the
"appropriate" spots to save their files.

I really can't think of any particular reason that it would be a better idea
to backup every client machine in your company (would cost a lot of money as
well). However, some "special" machines may need this, luckily backup
software such as Legato, CA, and Veritas all have "Client Backup Licenses"
which work awesome!

My thoughts anyways,

Dina
I setup a fifty GB share. I then created a folder for each user with
only their NTFS permissions to the folders. I then redirected everyone's My
Documents folders to their share. I back up the share every night. If you
have abusers you can easily set up disk quotas for them. I found my 80 users
are only using up approximately 36 GB.

Hi Everyone,

I know this has been covered but I can not find my notes. We finally got a
good stragety on backing up the server (thanks shirley) but how does
everyone handle clients? Do you back them up everynight or do you have them
put the files on the network? If they go on the network do you limit the
space?

I tell my users that data on work stations are expendable and will not
be backed up, ever. That if they want it backed up it goes to
designated folders. For individual users everybody gets a directory to
dump in as they wish, (mostly), Company level data, goes to designated
directories, IE: Customer specific, Vendor Specific, Product Specific,
etc etc. About, once a week I scan the network drives to see who's
being a hog, and to clean out their directory. Sales people are the
worst, (sales manager ate up 2 gigs, after she cleaned it out (deleted)
it was like 20 megs of usefull data). If they JUST HAVE TO HAVE THE
SPACE, I go to management and tell them I need 2 more $750.00 hard
drives for the server or it going to crash. Either way I get my space.
