Good Morning Everyone,

We are looking for an engineering plotter. I was trying to figure out
what the rest of the group is using.

The largest we need to print E size. (36x48)

Thanks,

Dina

Dina,

Check http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.asp?grp=PLO
<http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.asp?grp=PLO>

We use a HP 750C. This is an E-size color plotter using inkjet cartridges.
We've had if for a few years now and as I recollect it was about $ 5,000.

Print quality on the 750C has been excellent and like most HP products the
printer itself has been VERY reliable.

One caveat - it's VERY slow. An E-size print can take 5-10 minutes or more.
It also uses a roll of E size paper. If you are going to print smaller
prints like C or D ... expect to waste allot of paper.

We originally played around with the idea of scanning all customer prints,
saving them electronically, and then printing copies as needed on the floor.
Problem was we didn't have $ 10-15,000 for a decent scanner plus $ 10-15,000
for a printer that could keep up with us. Our 570C is fine for occasional
use but I would not recommend it for a volume situation.

Our "Solution" was to buy a Xerox 2520 Eng Copier for about $ 5,000. It's a
desktop "Copier" for prints up to size "E" of any length. Very fast and it
copies whatever size you put in - 1 to 1. As in, you manually feed in a
Size-C print on the bottom and a Size-C blank on the top and shazaam ...
This copier is FAST, uses standard toner, and has been VERY cheap to
maintain.

So the drill is:

* we keep "Masters" of all customer prints in locked file cabinets under
control of our production control people
* when we get a job they just do a quick copy of the print and sent the
copy to the floor as a one way trip to Grangeville

This way we avoid expensive scanners and printers. It's a CHEAP solution in
the grand scheme of things.

Dina, we have an HP DesignJet 750C that we have been using since before I
was working here. That's about 5 years without a single problem. Of course,
you probably can't get them anymore, but you never know. We have D and E
size sheets that we feed in for final design prints, plus it also takes a
roll of paper for ease of use.

At my previous gig, we had an HP 1055CM inkjet plotter. Expensive machine
(~$10K) and expensive consumables, like any inkjet. It did color, 3' wide,
was moderately fast and no reliability problems.

Also had a Xerox XES scanner / plotter that was over $20K. It was actually
two separate units SCSI and ethernetted together. It could copy (scan
directly to plotter) or plot from the network. For a couple additional $K
you got a code to unlock the "scan to network" functionality that was
already in it (a marketing scheme that really pisses me off, btw!) B&W
print only but quite fast. It needed regular PM from its vendor to keep
working and the windows print / plot drivers were rather buggy.

We have an HP 1050C Design Jet. No problems since we got it approx 2 years ago. We used to have a 750 and the 1050 does plot faster. Also you can use much larger ink cartridges. Holds 350ml cartridges.

Dina,

Just to add another vote, we have also been using a 750C for some time
(longer than my 2 1/2 years here).
Never a problem, "It just works".

We also use the HP 1050C. We have used it for 3 years with no problems.
The only thing we have had to do it was add more memory due to some of the
larger drawings that we send to it. We print the originals on the 1050C and
use a Xerox 3030 to make all of our D and E size copies.

We have an HP800 and a 750C. The HP800 is lots faster than the 750c. Both
will print single sheets as well as use a roll of paper. Had one problem
with the 750C and it took a LONG TIME (3 weeks) to get the part, but both of
them have been troupers. 750C is about 5 years old, the 800 2 years old.

All,

A day late, but with an answer:

1. Had the HP755CME for years, now. Works well, but slowly.

2. Had the HP430 E/A0 for less time. Had to get it when the roof leaked
on the 755. Works well, but slowly.

3. Just unplugged the Xerox 3050 & replaced it with a Kip Scan 2050 and
StarPrint 2000. For around 30,000USD, you can't beat it for speed &
versatility. Six D-size per minute is nothing to sneeze at. The local
Pitney-Bowes people were running a "special," and we got it on lease for 0%
APR.
