[Off Topic] NT Server Time

I installed nistime-32bit last week
Very easy to install and setup.
Set to fix server time every 24 hours. (shorter if you like)

No more "why is the time clock off by 15 seconds?"
(yes, they did ask that.....)

Thanks to all the people who pointed this software out.

because of the last flurry of server time emails

I am getting my b**t chewed regularly by the our shop supervisors because
our shop bell (really a loud tone) rings and Vantage is not showing the
correct time. The "bell" is driven by a programmable clock that drives a
tone generator on our paging system. It keeps time very accurately and is
dead on with the US Naval Observatory Atomic Clock tone. The NT Server (IBM
Netfinity 5500 less than a year old) on the other hand drifts badly, drops 2
minutes a week, so that they get uncoordinated. So employees hear the bell
and can't clock out (without penalty for clocking out early) until the
server catches up.

I understand there is a way to load an NT Service to go to an Internet site
and then set the NT time on a regular basis. Is anyone using something like
this? Alternatively, I don't care if the time is exactly right as long as
the bell and server agree (old proverb; Man with watch knows time, Man with
two watches is never sure). Is anyone using anything like a sound card to
generate a tone at specific times directly form the server? Suggestions not
involving me checking the time every day would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

I've had some limited experience with a program called Atomic Clock which
can be used to sychronize your server clock with the US Navel Observatory
Atomic Clock. We are not using here, but you may want to check into it.

I am in the same boat, except our old time clock which signals the tone
generator is the one that drifts. I am looking at putting an anolg relay
card into a pc and writing a script to fire the relay off momentarily at
predefined times. The relay being connected to the tone generator would then
make the buzzer sound as before. We synch all servers and pc's daily and we
use a server as the main "time server" which updates to an atomic clock.

That all said I have not had time to try this out yet. When I do I can get
back to you. If anyone else following this thread has benn there done that
let us know what you used. Feel free to contact me off line.

We have a small relay connected to the com port of our Vantage server. This
relay sends a signal to a tone generator hooked to our PA system. We use AT
commands at the appropriate times to run the program that trips the relay.
If you want to put the relay on a different system than your Vantage server,
you can keep the clocks synched using an AT to run a NET TIME command.

I haven't used it myself, but if you want to sync the time over the
internet, there is a program called timeserv.exe that comes with the NT
server resource kit.

Todd,
I have been using a utility called Tardis2000. There are versions for
nt,2000,98 and 95. It is a try before you buy shareware. It won't kick you
out if you can't get approval for the buy right away, but it is worth what
they charge. I set it up in a matter of a few minutes time on each system.
I would guess 10 minutes or less for each system I wanted accurate time on.
I use the broadcast function of the Tardis utility on our Exchange/winproxy
server and then have it broadcast the time ever 64 seconds or so. I only
have it check the internet every hour or so though. It was very easy to
configure and if you are installing the K9 (the client portion) on an NT
computer it is just a matter of saving the file (rather small) to the system
folder and installing the service with a short cmd prompt line that is
explained clearly in the instructions. If you are installing it on a 95/98
computer it is easier, just copy it to the startup folder.
When I started here, it was my job to keep the clock on the vantage server
updated. My predecessor (Jeremiah) updated about once a week and caught
flack every time (you know how people like to arrive right to the minute).
I installed this and have not heard another word about it and have done no
upkeep in 9 months. I just forget about it. I expect to do nothing for the
next foreseeable future either.
The site is...
http://www.kaska.demon.co.uk/

If you prefer to check the options...
here is a site that has several products on it....
http://ntgames.com/workstation/time_sychronizers.html

Good luck. Be sure to let this take care of itself. I am sure you have
much more important things to worry about.
