[off topic] Tape Drives

Todd,

I'm sure you are aware that our organization is highly distributed and
has representatives, affiliates and branch offices located throughout
the country. The address to which you refer is a temporary location as
we secure permanent residence in the area. It is not now, nor has it
ever been our intent to mislead but rather to provide a centrally
located meeting venue for all of our employees and affiliates. Barring
an international airport in Lebanon Kansas, it seemed reasonable that it
would be as easy to get to O'Hare from Logan as LAX.

To answer your question directly, yes, Katharine and I are in
California; Aspacia, however, is not. I hope this helps clarify the
rumor and please feel free to contact us should you have any other
questions regarding our organization.

Michael / Katherine,

A clarification please. You are showing an address at 27 North Wacker
Drive
....

Rumor has it that this is just a mailbox for the purpose of showing a
Wacker
Drive address. Although impressive this is a little misleading.

Aren't the two of you still located in California ?

Todd,

Check out the products from the Ultrium consortium (IBM, Seagate, HP,
Etc...). They have introduced a new LTO tape format that stores 200 Gb
per tape with autoloaders that store up to 1.7 Tb. So now you can back
up that pesky 1.2 Terabyte Vantage database without leaving the couch.
That's "Larger Capacity" mate!

Ron,

Can you define "Larger Capacity" ? How much disk space do you have on
your
server is probably a better question ...

Call me lazy but I like the idea of being able to backup a server on ONE
tape. ( Probably due to painful memories of loading and unloading reel
to
reel tapes for backing up main-frames. )

How do you reserve a specific IP address for a future use on the server? We are planning to install a security system that ties into our network. They need to know the IP address the system will use before they send it so that it's ready to plug in. Any ideas?

The server is NT 4.0. When going through the instructions to reserve the IP address, it wants you to do something on the client end. But in this case, the client (ie. the security system) is not present (yet). How do we make sure that a specific IP address will not be used until it is needed by that client?

Are you using DHCP to assign your IP addresses or static addressing?

If you are using DHCP like you sound, you can set it up to ignore certain
ranges of Ip addresses. Find your DHCP server and review its settings and
it will probably become clear what you need to do.

Troy,

This is really more a matter of you just setting up standards for how you
want to use IP addresses.

This is our convention:

First - we have -4- sites in 3 states. Each site has it's own subnet and
the numbering convention is the same for each subnet.

Location 1 = xxx.xxx.001.xxx
Location 2 = xxx.xxx.002.xxx
Location 3 = xxx.xxx.003.xxx
Location 4 = xxx.xxx.004.xxx

Then for each site we use the following conventions:

xxx.xxx.xxx.001 = Main router in each location.

xxx.xxx.xxx.002 = Internet router ( Only at the main site )

xxx.xxx.xxx.003 = Firewall ( Only at the main site )

xxx.xxx.xxx.010 through xxx.xxx.xxx.019 = Servers

xxx.xxx.xxx.020 through xxx.xxx.xxx.029 = Switches

xxx.xxx.xxx.040 through xxx.xxx.xxx.049 = IP addresses granted to "Dial Up
Networking" via RAS using RAS-DHCP

xxx.xxx.xxx.050 through xxx.xxx.xxx.149 = DHCP addresses granted to misc
PC's.

xxx.xxx.xxx.150 through xxx.xxx.xxx.223 = Manually assigned IP addresses.
We keep track of these manually via a MS-Access DB. Why would we do this?
For all remote PC's and PC's that we want to connect to via PcAnywhere. For
instance, my boss dials into our RAS NT Server from home. Once connected he
uses PcAnywhere to connect to his desktop using the IP address for the
connection. We have ALL remote PC's loaded with PcAnywhere at IPL and
locked down with passwords. This allows us to use PcAnywhere to link to our
remote PC's in different states and do maintenance / check up on them. (
Check up on them? Yes, it's the only effective way I've found to keep games
and other junk off of the remote PC's. The only thing keeping these people
in line is the fact that they know we do periodic audits. )

xxx.xxx.xxx.224 through xxx.xxx.xxx.254 = Same as previous range - EXCEPT -
this range is allowed to browse the internet. My CISCO internet router is
setup to only allow traffic from this range from any of our subnets.

The low ranges that are not being used are for future ( ??? ) requirements
...

This scheme is NOT an industry standard. It's just what I came up with when
I was trying to figure out some relatively easy to remember scheme.

At any rate, to make a long babble short ... to "Reserve" an address just
don't include it in your DHCP scope and do not manually assign it.

Hope this helps.

Todd Anderson

Ron,

Can you define "Larger Capacity" ? How much disk space do you have on your
server is probably a better question ...

Call me lazy but I like the idea of being able to backup a server on ONE
tape. ( Probably due to painful memories of loading and unloading reel to
reel tapes for backing up main-frames. )

We use the Seagate Scorpion autoloader (that just sounds cool, doesn't it?),
which uses Seagate Backup Exec software and will hold 4 24-gigabyte
(compressed) tapes. This has been a good drive for us, and we won't have to
upgrade any time soon (we're only using 2 of the 4 slots now). We also an
HP TrueStore (to back up our secondary server) which has been equally
reliable, but only holds one 24-gigabyte tape. My I.S. guys says there may
be bigger tape capacities out there now, so my information might be a bit
outdated.

We have a Compaq-branded HP DAT drive, DDS-3, 12/24GB. 2 years old and
obviously beyond cutting edge.

Compared to the first Exabyte 8200 I got 12+ years ago, it has 12X the
capacity, but only 4-6X the transfer rate; around 1-2MB/sec depending on
data compressability. What do you have to spend these days to get a drive
with speed to match capacity?

Ron,

Can you define "Larger Capacity" ? How much disk space do you have on your
server is probably a better question ...

Call me lazy but I like the idea of being able to backup a server on ONE
tape. ( Probably due to painful memories of loading and unloading reel to
reel tapes for backing up main-frames. )

We used HP SureStore tape drives for 3 years, and they died twice - replaced
the last HP with a Seagate, and have had no problems.

We cycled 5 tapes thru a weekday backup schedule, and had to replace a tape
about once a month with both the HP drives, and since using the Seagate (4-5
months), have not had to replace a tape.

Thanks for your responses. I've passed this info. on to our network person for consideration.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] [off topic] Reserve IP address

How do you reserve a specific IP address for a future use on the server? We

need to know the IP address the system will use before they send it so that

Ron,

For a server with 30 gig of disk space I would normally plan for a tape
drive that has a capacity of 20-25 gig. It's rare that you would fill the
drives beyond that point. This makes DDS-3 tapes a little on the small side
unless you use an autoloader. DDS-4 tapes are a better fit. 8mm tapes and
DLT tapes will also work but they are going to cost you more money and you
do not need the extra capacity.

Check out DDS-4 tape drives - 20 gig std / 40 w/compression.
http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.asp?key=dds-4
<http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.asp?key=dds-4>
The tape drives cost about $ 1,200. Tapes are about $ 25/each and tape
cleaning cartridges are about $ 10.00. I like the HP units. See also

page=productlisting%2Easp for more specs.

Price vs performance looks pretty reasonable.

I'd also take a good look at OnStream's ADR 50 unit -
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=203070
<http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=203070> as an internal
unit. The tape drive only cost about $ 670. But watch out for the tapes -
$ 66.50 each and $ 53.32 for the cleaning cartridge.

In both cases compute the cost of the tapes. Watch out for the inkjet
paradox - cheap tape drive with expensive tapes where what seems like a good
deal ends up costing you a ton of money. I have about 20 tapes in rotation
for EACH of our servers.

Dell also has a good tape drive selector at
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.asp?category_id=3030
<http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.asp?category_id=3030>

Note that although Dell's website gets points for info ... for accessories
you can usually find them cheaper at places like www.cdw.com
<http://www.cdw.com> or www.insight.com <http://www.insight.com> . ( For
both CDW and Insight you will get a lower price on the phone then you will
get from their webpage. Especially if you tell them that you are quoting
both companies. These two HATE to loose to each other!!! )

Ron,

I just purchased / installed an Exabyte Mammoth2 Tape system in June.
Native capacity - 60GB (before compression). It was highly recommended in
several magazines and online tech sites. It's fast - I back up approx 18 GB
of data in 2 hours - that includes Exchange mailboxes (which are slow). I'd
say it would kick out about 15GB of data in 1 hour 15 minutes.

I've been very happy with it.

We recently got a Quantum DLT-1 that holds 110/220Gb. It might seem big but
in the last 3 years we outgrew a 15/30Gb and a 35/70Gb, that I still use for
incremental back-ups, keeping the DLT-1 for weekly and monthly. Now I'm not
planning on upgrading for the next 2 years at least (?), and the price
difference between a 15/30, a 35/70 and the 110/220 is not really an
obstacle when you look at the long term. The tapes are a little more
expensive but it also backs up faster, using some laser technology. Let me
know if you'd like more info.
