You could also set up one of your computers as a gateway and put Norton
Antivirus 2.1 for Gateways on it.

This runs about $16.50 per user plus $22.00 for media from CDW.

Sorry to be late with this. The Exchange Users group I subscribe to swear
by Sybari(Antigen) or Trend. If you want to research the emails, check the
archives at www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp When you get to this site,
look for the Exchange Server at the top. You might want to go there first.
If you need more help let me know. There was a big discuss last couple of
weeks and these 2 seem to be the most recommended. I will probably be going
that way myself.

I use Network Associates Groupshield Exchange (Mcafee)
You already have antivirus but does it scan inbound e-mail b4
your users get it?

Yes - Innoculate-IT scans attachments for viruses but does not allow me to
block attachments.

Problem is that these days the virusus are being transmitted faster then the
updates to the signature files. Two weeks ago I downloaded the latest
update for Inoculate-IT 2 or 3 hours after it was released and 45 MINUTES
before receiving an email with the new virus. That's cutting it a little
too close for my taste.

I'd just as soon say that all --- *.VBS, *.MP3, etc files are NOT allowed
and are rejected or guaranteed until I have a chance to review them.

I've used Groupshield for a couple of years now. It allows me to block
attachments like .vbs etc.
It also tries (I don't know how good it is at it) to block new undiscovered
viruses. An ad-in for
Exchange. I configure it through Exchange Administrator.

We use GFI Mail Essentials. It lets you filter messages based on attachments
and message content (incoming and outgoing) and will also quarantine
messages to approve/deny. It will also allow you to scan for viruses using
any AV package that can run from a command line (we use Norton).

If you can scan them, then you may be able to set your S/W to grab and
quarantine all the files that match the types you want to stop. I know you
can do this in Norton AV with some registry settings - Maybe you have the
same ability in Innoculate-IT. Check it out (you don't have to request a PO
for an hour of your time).

Todd,

We have the same setup you described - NT-4 Server, Exchange 5, and
InnoculateIT.

We have not been able to find an add-on for blocking attachments by
extension, so we have implemented the latest Microsoft Outlook security
update. It allows you to block attachments by extension at the desktop,
using a security template stored in the public folder in exchange. You can
also create custom templates for specific users and groups. This way you
can allow certain attachments for certain people.

Unfortunately, it is not the easiest thing to deploy. If you have a small
system, you can store the installation program in a shared network folder,
and go from desk to desk installing it. Deploying from an administrative
share using a login script, or a emailed shortcut is not as easy as it
should be.

Anyway, it's not the solution I had in mind either, but at least it is free
(that is if you have outlook 2000 on all of your workstations). One other
thing, you have to have Service Release 1 at minimum loaded on all your
workstations. If you don't that's just one more thing you have to figure
out how to deploy.

There's a pretty good white paper on this on Microsoft's knowledge base.

Sorry to be late responding, but I strongly recommend GFI Mail Essentials as
well. The latest version is easy to configure, its rules based, and allows
different rules for different users. We have not had a virus hit our system
since we installed it last September (knock on wood) although we have had
dozens of infected messages stopped in their tracks.

Another reason we bought this product is that it allows content scanning and
can be configured to stop messages with objectionable content - a topic very
near and dear to the heart of our corporate attorney.

One other benefit - I can block attachments over a certain size. If someone
tries to send a large attachment, Mail Essentials send me an email message
and I can look at the content of the message and the name of the file to
decide if I want the file in (or out) of my system.

Its been worth every penny we spent. We have the SMTP version, but there is
also one for Exchange.

If you have Groupshield Exchange installed, you can find it under servers.
In our exchange environment, we only have 1 server. In Exchange
Administrator, click on the name of your server and in the right hand window
a list of items will be shown. Network Associates Groupshield Exchange
appears second from the bottom, just above System Attendant.
