Subject: software to detect viruses

What are some of you using for virus detection software on your
servers? We have decent virus software on our servers currently, but
it's just a "plain-jane" piece of software to "do-the-job". I'm
looking to purchase more up-to-date virus software. One of the
things I'm curious about is if I need an Internet Gateway piece of
virus software. We have 1 file server (NT) and a W2K server that I
use for the Internet and mail. It's not a mail server. I'm using
the NAT on the server to give everyone shared dial-up access. It's
the "gateway" that we're using for the Internet. With that said, I'm
not sure if I should be looking for specific software for 2 file
servers, software for 1 file server and 1 email server, or software
for 1 file server and 2 pieces of software for the other server such
as Internet Gateway protection and email server protection.

Any suggestions? Anyone.............anyone.............

I have been very happy with Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus Corporate Edition
which covers the servers as well as all the desktops and keeps all the virus
patterns updated automatically. The cost was very reasonable compared to
dealing with even one outbreak. It also scans incoming email. The license
covers both servers and the desktops but if I recall correctly it was
variable depending on the total number of desktops, something like $22 each
for us. The key is in their ability to update patterns quickly and Symantec
and McAfee seem to be the best at this.

We use McAfee on all desktops and server - which is controlled from a 'console' at server. PC scans are also done on a scheduled basis (from the server). Users can override this cumbersome scan if they are in the middle of something, but it shows us at the server if this has happened so that we can resend the request at another time. New virus updates are done automatically. We also have an email virus scanner on our email box. This is the front line protection in iur company, as it finds several virus's per week trying to sneek in on email attachments. I don't know if we've ever gotten a virus on a PC in the two years I've been here. The biggest risk to the PC is Hotmail and Yahoo accounts that users have.

Our server has no internet access, so I can't vouch for gateway's and such.

We also use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. We have been extremely
happy with it. We switched from the home version of Norton to the corporate
edition. During the implementation, Corporate detected many viruses that
were overlooked by the home version. We have 3 servers and 70 workstations
covered under the new system. It is definitely worth the price.

We use InoculateIT on the servers and PC's. I use Antigen on my Exchange
Server...loveit. If I understand this right...your users get their mail
from the internet.. I would think you need to have a good virus software on
each PC. I'm not sure about software for your "gateway" server, as to what
to use, but you really need to have something on everything and keep it upto
date. So what you pick needs to be easy to update the virus definitions
(weekly basis isn't to often).

We recently switched from Computer Associates Innoculan to Symantec Norton Anti Virus Corporate Edition. Innoculan was running fine for over a year and then a few months ago, for some unknown reason, brought our network down to its knees. Symantec has been running fine and has caught a few viruses. The server automatically retrieves the latest virus definition from Symantec's website and then 'pushes' it down to all of our workstations. The other slick feature is that the server will install the software on all the workstations automatically, no need to go from pc to pc to install and configure.

For everyone who is using Symantec Norton Antivirus Corporate.........where did you purchase it? I just went to Staples website and they quoted the licenses somewhere around $600. But, for some reason I couldn't find the actual software to purchase. That really seems cheap for licenses!! Where did you purchase your software?

Got ours through CDW. They have some good licensing people that can figure
out what you need and tailor the costs to match your site. They also seem
to have "experts" assigned to major software vendors who have internal
contacts and get get good (as in correct) info faster than if you tried to
by calling the vendor directly.

We purchased ours from PCMall and it also was shipped directly from
Symantec. Yes, we installed Corporate on our vantage server. We do the
administration through the same server. We haven't run into any problems
with vantage and Corporate. We are on version 3.00.632.

Only problem I had heard of was to make real-time settings on user PC not
scan Epicor folder's mapped drive. In order words don't scan the whole
Vantage database every time you start Vantage. We had a lot more problems
with this with individual copies of NAV than the corp version. Yes, it is
on our Vantage server too but I believe there to I exclude the Epicor folder
structure.

Our NAV is on the applications server. I don't know that Norton causes a
conflict with Vantage, more that its constant scanning of all active files
really slows Vantage down. Can anyone elaborate?

Four Words - Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition.

As others have mentioned, it does its job, and does it well. Both the File
scanning and e-mail modules are a must, client and server. We purchased
Exchange Server primarily because it integrates so well with our anti virus
software.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] software to detect viruses

What are some of you using for virus detection software on your servers? We
have decent virus software on our servers currently, but it's just a
"plain-jane" piece of software to "do-the-job". I'm looking to purchase
more up-to-date virus software. One of the things I'm curious about is if I
need an Internet Gateway piece of virus software. We have 1 file server
(NT) and a W2K server that I use for the Internet and mail. It's not a mail
server. I'm using the NAT on the server to give everyone shared dial-up
access. It's the "gateway" that we're using for the Internet. With that
said, I'm not sure if I should be looking for specific software for 2 file
servers, software for 1 file server and 1 email server, or software for 1
file server and 2 pieces of software for the other server such as Internet
Gateway protection and email server protection.

Any suggestions? Anyone.............anyone.............
