[OT] Bar Codes

OK, Now you made my day. "Cultural Resistance" is an understatement here.
Changing the color of the Shipping Department's desktop, is enough to bring
things to a screeching halt... : ) Les

I recently purchased a Zebra 105Se, and now face the prospect of
having to recreate all our Customer barcode labels. The labels were
all created in software that comes with the Sato Lable printers. Most
of these labels require user prompts. I'm not an expert at barcoding,
and was hoping that somebody could tell me if it's possible to create
labels (with user prompts) that would be compatible with most label
printers? I wouldn't want to do this again, if we decide that we
didn't like the Zebras.

We have Zebra's Z4M. We will be generating our barcodes out of Vantage.
We've commissioned some mild programing to allow a Report Builder Report to
be run from a button click without any further user interaction. We are
converting over from Wasp Labeler. So far testing shows that this will work
quite nicely. For those interested in the programing should contact Rick
Lane off list. I've already found a bunch of uses for Report builder
reports from a VB button. I'll also share my report builder report that I
use for generating the the AIAG lables. My plan is to have a button for the
generic standard barcode and add buttons for those customers that want a
particular format. This would be done from the shipping detail VB. So far
I'm able to pull what ever data I need with special fields for special data
with some careful report building.

We too are using the Z4M with Report Builder and it has been great (after a
few startup driver issues). A seperate RB for each customer's label format
so had to create a sub-menu just for labels. Selections (job, order,
etc...) made via regular filters and any that require non-system data are
also passed via filter (parsing the filter string). After the first few
"flavors" were made all the rest were similar to an existing one so new
formats only take about 20 minutes. I don't think it would be possible to
export something from WASP that would fit into RB but designing labels in RB
is pretty easy.

Thanks Todd,
RB really sounds like the way to go. I'm going to have to use VB fields like
Shirley, but that will be a one time shot. I'm just trying to avoid possibly
having to recreate them all again the future.

What I've done is looked at everything done in Zebra. I found that 80% were
a standard format, so I created the standard format and will run samples
for customer approval before we switch over. There's going to have to be
some discipline added to the shipping department because they aren't going
to be able to slop the data around like they've been able to do in the past.
This won't be an instant transition and it won't be necessarily easy.
"Cultural Resistance" is going to rear its ugly head. For those customers
that require "Special" I'll have to do another RB format. I'm going to try
and keep it to 2 buttons, one for the "Standard" and an elegant way for each
customer to get their special.
