Printing Barcode Labels

We use a combination of methods simply because I don't have time. We
have Z4M's (Zebra's), our legacy system is through Wasp labeler.
However, I'm going to eventually go to VB buttons and Report Builder.
My finishing people have been using the VB label buttons based on a
couple of custom progress programs. They punch in the number of labels
click the button, done. Everybody seems to like it. I will eventually
switch all (hundreds) labels to that format.

We print barcoded shipping labels from a Zebra Z4M printer. No special
software - just Report Builder - and trat the printer like a laser
printer. We use the Dataworks 39 font for code 39 bars. We have many
customers demanding label format specific to them so they are all on the
Vantage menus as RB reports for various customers and flavors. Very
easy for shipping people to use.

How does everyone print barcode and/or shipping labels?

1. What label software? Loftware... Bartender... Label Shop... ???
or
none?

2. Do you use Crystal or Report Builder or MS Access and create a
file/database and then suck it into your label software?

3. Do you use your label software and pull it from Vantage using ODBC
or
??.

Thanks

1. Label Matrix by StrandWare.
2. Progress program added to Vantage menu which creates a DBF file and
launches the print engine of Label Matrix using a specific label format
defined in a field in the Customer table VBForm and the data in the newly
created DBF file.
3. No.

Custom. Wrote this way back in the days of Vantage 2.7 or before if I
recall. The packing person selects a Packing Slip # from a drop down list,
then selects the backing line from a list and clicks print. The label
format is taken from a field on the customer's VBForm, the number of labels
is taken from the packing slip line item for the number of labels to print.
Someday I plan to rewrite it as a touch screen application for the shipping
dept, just hasn't been very high priority. (also the rule of thumb, if it
ain't broke, don't fix it.)

We use two different solutions specific to warehouse mass printing labels
and shipping labels:

Warehouse Mass Printing - ODBC - Access to print our standard warehouse
label that works with our order picking solution.

Shipping - There are different requirements that need to be met by customer.
Vendor Number, Number of Containers, Weight, etc. We use currently a RB
report to meet customer specs and a progress procedure that reads this
report and fields in VB forms at the packing slip line and customer tables
to produce a customer specific shipping label. You might want to contact
Calvin at Misha1.

We previously used Loftware, but it was way more than what we
needed. Bartender is a much more intuitive solution, and it works
great for us. We use Bartender 7.0 with Datamax label printers and
an ODBC connection to Vantage to retrieve the data.
