[OT but 6.10 too] Bartender Software Questions

We use LabelMatrix that I installed on the Vantage Server and then created a Vantage app to pass the Packing Slip information and specific Customer Label format (pulled from VBForm field on Customer table) to an Visual Basic app on the Server via TCP which executes the LabelMatrix command line printing the labels out at the printer specified from the client work station. Been doing this since Vantage 2.x something and has worked quite well over the years. Nice thing about this way, I only need one license of LabelMatrix but all Vantage client workstations can print labels.

Subject: [Vantage] [OT but 6.10 too] Bartender Software Questions

We are being required by a customer to print 2D barcodes on some parts. I've been looking at BarTender but the price is a little steep. I ahve a couple questions for those using it and who have recommended it in other posts....or who know of good alternatives for 2D.

1. How do you license it? I would be the sole developer and we have one PC that drives a Zebra Z4M-plus printer. In a pinch I could develop on the printer PC and need only one seat.

2. This first application there will be two labels that will be identical....basically just part number for two parts. Each label for a part will be identical...no serializing or date info, etc... I assume no interaction with Vantage to this would be a stand alone design right?

3. Later on we may need to pass data from Vantage to print Code 128 labels. From Vantage 6.10 what's the best "flow" or method for doing this? We currently print all labels from Report Builder but they are all simple Code 39.

Thanks,
Todd Caughey

I'm on Progress/Vantage 8.03.404 and I am now learning how to work
with Bartender.

As Vic warned me prior to purchasing it, Bartender is very "clunky".
I would not recommend it at all. It is taking me over a week to
learn to perform extremely simple tasks. It is not at all intuitive.

Your best bet is to try to use Crystal Reports for your Vantage
labels. However, if you have labeling requirements that cannot be
met by Crystal (as I did), and if you plan to use ODBC anyway; then I
highly recommend Label Matrix. I have used Label Matrix in the past
to meet a wide variety of customer labeling requirements. It is very
intuitive -- takes only minutes to learn to how to set up your label
to do anything you want.

Bartender and Label Matrix both offer the same wide variety of
features. I'm sure that either software would meet your needs; but
Label Matrix is much easier to use.

Regarding your question about licensing of Bartender: It is sold by
the number of printers you will be printing to in any 24 hour
period. You can install and use the software on as many stations as
you want; but anyone and everyone can only print to the limited
number of printers in any 24 hour period. The license keeps track of
exactly which printers have been printed to as well as the date and
time they were last printed to.
