[Vantage 6.1] Barcoding

I'd have to agree, Vantage is not a barcode friendly application. All a scanner would do for Vantage is turn the barcode into keystrokes, so one has to make sure that the proper field in Vantage is already selected before they scan the barcode. I ended up having to create barcode friendly screens/application that allows my users/operators to scan in barcodes (in any order) and the prefix of the barcode determines which Vantage field it belongs to. Much more work but you can't scan the wrong information into the wrong field this way.

Yes, and no. There are SOME barcoded printing features built in but likely what you are after is not. Or, likely not the way you want to.

Yes, adding a scanner will allow you to read the bar coding that is produced. In-line keyboard wedge scanners (turning scan characters into keysrokes) are plug & play...literally.

Printing barcoded items is another matter. It is fairly easy to produce labels on specialized barcode label printers or sheets of laser printed labels. Vantage comes with a Code 39 font so Crystal or Report Builder can print barcodes to any media. There are several solid makers of label printers. We've found the Zebra Z4M line to be both affordable and rugged and print 4" X 6" bar coded shipping labels from RB. One note in the programming....bar coded fields need an asterik appended to the start and end of the characters to be scanned so by the convention followed by Epicor all bar code ready fields are named BC-xxxx....that is they are the bar code version whatever the field name is.

We would like to begin barcoding to make parts pulling and inventory
easier. When we purchased Vantage several years ago, we were told it
had all of the capability built in and we just had to get a scanner.

How easy is it to implement and would someone be able to point us in
the right direction to get started?

Thanks,
