Unfortunately I am the MIS Manager (as in mis-manager) and have a certain
amount of envy for our Quality Manager's title (but not his job). I think
"Wizard" would be good but will settle for Director of IT (approved finally)
when I get new business cards printed. IT is much more accurate than MIS
since I handle phone system, copiers, faxes, wireless phones, A/V equipment,
etc.... all technology basically. I'll send a copy of job desc. off-line.

For ISO try to keep it very simple like:
IT Manager: Research, recommend, approve purchase and maintain computer
hardware, software, telecommunication and office equipment. Work with
suppliers of such equipment on upgrades and support agreements. Train and
trouble shoot with end users.

I was asked to write up my own job description. Here's what I came up with:

1) To manage (install, configure, maintain, & update) and oversee all
aspects of the computer systems at Malmberg Engineering, including hardware
(servers, workstations, wiring, hubs, switches, routers, printers, plotters,
etc.), software (applications, operating systems, programs, databases, data,
etc.) and outside support/services.

2) To manage and oversee all aspects of the telephone systems, including
hardware, software, telephone carriers, answering machines, voice mail,
wiring and services.

3) To assist in the design, development and implementation of an ISO 9000
program, including employee training and documentation of the quality
system.

4) To lead, and offer support for, internal ISO audits.

5) Attend manufacturing reviews, as needed.

6) To provide backup and support for the programming department.

7) To review, as needed, quotations from MalmbergÂ’s sales department before
submission to our customers.

8) To develop and support a rapid prototyping department, including
programming, setup and operation of the Stratasys FDM machine, customer
presentation and customer support.

9) Maintain and update Malmberg EngineeringÂ’s web site.

Obviously, some of it is a little more than just MIS stuff, but such is life
in a small company.

P.S. Several years ago, as we were growing, I was 'promoted' into this new
position. Not knowing what to call this position, they first suggested
'Systems Analyst'. I told them I'd *hit* the first person that called me
the 'Systems Anal-ist'. Quickly changed to 'MIS' <smile>.

Well, during my stint at USAero, I liked to use "Network Janitor" Got a
lot of good reactions out of non-IT folks ;)

But seriously... in the 3 or 4 years that they were in ISO mode, I was
never once asked by our quality engineer (the in-house guy responsible) or
any of the auditors about my involvement. In fact, I don't think they
bugged any of the accounting or sales folks; just the direct production.

Troy,

On paper the company has me listed as a "Manager of Information Systems" /
IS-Manager

These days I would list my title as "Senior Systems Integrator". It's hard
to truthfully call yourself a manager when you are a staff of one and
"Systems Integrator" is far more accurate these days.

Subject: [Vantage] {OT} IT/IS Job Descriptions

Good Morning IT/IS land.

For ISO purposes, what do y'all use for your title and job description?
If anyone would care to forward something to me, I promise to be duly
impressed.

Seriously, I am being asked to describe what I do (and what I should be
called - what a loaded question) and wondered what the industry standard is
for our IS type work.
