OT - IT related ISO

Shirley, Julie, John... Thanks. At least now I know where the Yellow Brick
Road begins. C'mon Toto, let's skip these ruby slippers on down to ISO to
see the wizard about catching the next bag of hot air back to reality.

While the group is discussing ISO matters, I'd like to get some input on
ISO
as it relates to strictly the IT Dept. Up to now, I haven't had to deal
too
much with ISO, but now it's my turn at bat. I went through group
archives
and couldn't find anything that specifically relates to computer
departments
and ISO. So I thought I'd ask you all what things you think need to be
looked at, or how this should be approached. This is my first time
addressing ISO as an IT department, so I'm looking for a few insights.

Thanks in advance,
Gary Polvinale

The key thing is to look at where IT interfaces with your other
departments. Depending on your role in your company the area's that
will impact you the most comes under data and document control. Have
written policies for the WHO WHAT and WHEN of your procedures and
written instructions on HOW to do the nuts and bolts of things. Read
element 5 of your ISO requirements manual. Read your company Quality
Policy on what your company is promising to do in regards to IT. Read
the other departments procedures and see how THEY think the IT roll
interfaces with their department. Here IT touches virtually EVERY
department and operation to some degree. Mainly do what you normally
do, just document it very well.

Gary:
The way ISO affects my IT department is this:
I have to keep a record of all software that is used that related to manufacturing - (skip things like WinZip, Wordprocessing, etc),
my record details the name of the software, version, and what it is used for plus the date it was ordered (has to have my approval), the date it was received, tested (and by whom) and finally when & that I approved for implementation and use.

Other than that, my backup procedure is also documented.

Hope that helps.
