[OT] IT Career advice - opinions wanted

As an HR person - I agree with James - Get the Degree. Unfortunately,
now most companies are looking for a bachelors degree minimum then
experience.

Well this is a hot topic for me
I have been in my current job for over a year and a half

My qualifications are
17+ years in the computer industry with an associates degree
I am A Plus Certified and took all the NT 2000 MCSE Stuff
Got a MCP out of it and gave up
The thing I saw time and time again (While I was unemployed for 8
months)
Bachelors Degree
Guess what
I am now in a online program to obtain my bachelors

Certs are nice but 9 out of 10 times its degree & experience

Hope that helps

It's been a while since I've done a hard drive upgrade in a server with
Win2K installed. I was wondering what methods others have used to do this.
The system is a Raid 1 Server using Seagate Backup Exec. Any new ideas
welcome. Thanks.

Also, I've been installing several wireless lans in my side business and
they seem to have problems restoring network drives after the connection is
lost. Anyone heard of anything like this. One wireless Lan cannot connect
to shared network drives or shared printers at all but my wired workstations
using the same configurations for TCPIP work fine..using DHCP from the
router to configure settings...one of those hair pullers...using Linksys
wireless router that has no updates available...any ideas?

Thanks,

Sorry all for the way off topic post but this is a well-diversified group
whose members almost always have sound advice. IÂ’m not immediately looking
for a job but have some concerns that my job skills are becoming stagnant.
We still run NT servers with primarily 95/98/NT clients. IÂ’m very
comfortable with this environment. However, NT is basically a dead
operating system. We have no plans on upgrading our IT systems because like
most of you IÂ’m sure manufacturing is extremely tight and has been for the
past 2 years so it is a “if it works don’t touch it” environment. Anyways,
I was certified from MS on their NT operating systems but donÂ’t have the
2000 and XP certs. My experience is somewhat limited with Active Directory,
etc. Now IÂ’m confident that I could handle a 2000/XP network but couldnÂ’t
run off at the mouth about how to do this or that from memory. So do you
think it is worth going again for one of those XP/2000 certs (which IÂ’m not
totally sold on based on past experience), doing it myself through the books
or forgetting both and just finish my degree. I plan to finish the degree
regardless but that is about 2 more years going part time and I know I wonÂ’t
be here that long. Anyway, sorry for the OT post but any opinions/advice
would be appreciated.

Jim,

Finish your degree, but in your spare time keep tinkering with the new
technology. (Anything you can do to speed up finishing? ie. summer
sessions?)
Salvage a few old systems for use at home. Build crazy networks in your
basement. Do stuff like mixing 2003 and Linux, or log on from your bathroom
to your basement servers using Citrix. Those types of habits impress me a
lot more as an interviewer than certs....

HTH,

Paul

Jim,

I had been looking for a new job for a long time. As I looked through
the various job listings for IT people, they usually asked for both
certs and Bachelor Degrees. I also found that quite a few listings (in
Michigan) for Windows wanted knowledge in Active Directory. I just
recently (June) got another job. The company that hired me was most
drawn to my experience and Bachelor Degree. Once I got into the job, the
company said that they would pay for certs that I wanted to get. So what
I have drawn from this experience is that they valued my Degree first
and then want me to get the certs. I also noticed that while scanning
through job listings, the majority of good paying companies are
outsourcing their IT personnel. I had an interview with an outsourcer
for a job at Daimler-Chrysler. The outsourcer said that both GM and
Chrysler mostly use outsourcing to help screen only the best candidates
for the job. The outsourcer said that they mostly look for
certifications and degrees. This may not apply to all outsourcers or
companies, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.

The funny thing is several of the employees in my department are older
(50+) and don't have a degree. The company said that they are looking in
the future for employees that have some sort of formal education
(degree). So that is one of the reasons why they were drawn to my
resume. I don't have any certs but I'm definitely going to get a few
within a year because the company pays for them.

By the way, my new job is with a bank. I found that I just wasn't
getting the experience that I wanted from working in manufacturing.
Working in a different industry has also given me a broader overview of
where I want my career to go. Because of the demand in computer security
at this position I'm now looking toward, perhaps, Internet Security in
the next 8 years or so.

Just my 2 cents......

~Wendy

Sheesh guys;

1) UL doesn't mention anything about outhouses.
2) Dump and load from your bathroom gives the whole thing a totally
different perspective.

Jim,

Finish your degree, but in your spare time keep tinkering with the new
technology. (Anything you can do to speed up finishing? ie. summer
sessions?)
Salvage a few old systems for use at home. Build crazy networks in your
basement. Do stuff like mixing 2003 and Linux, or log on from your
bathroom
to your basement servers using Citrix. Those types of habits impress me
a
lot more as an interviewer than certs....

Sorry all for the way off topic post but this is a well-diversified
group
whose members almost always have sound advice. I'm not immediately
looking
for a job but have some concerns that my job skills are becoming
stagnant.
We still run NT servers with primarily 95/98/NT clients. I'm very
comfortable with this environment. However, NT is basically a dead
operating system. We have no plans on upgrading our IT systems because
like
most of you I'm sure manufacturing is extremely tight and has been for
the
past 2 years so it is a "if it works don't touch it" environment.
Anyways,
I was certified from MS on their NT operating systems but don't have the
2000 and XP certs. My experience is somewhat limited with Active
Directory,
etc. Now I'm confident that I could handle a 2000/XP network but
couldn't
run off at the mouth about how to do this or that from memory. So do
you
think it is worth going again for one of those XP/2000 certs (which I'm
not
totally sold on based on past experience), doing it myself through the
books
or forgetting both and just finish my degree. I plan to finish the
degree
regardless but that is about 2 more years going part time and I know I
won't
be here that long. Anyway, sorry for the OT post but any
opinions/advice
would be appreciated.

Ok, all this talk about changing jobs has me thinking. Maybe this is way
out of line, but...
I thought I would mention to this group (as I have found it so useful in so
many other ways) my plan of moving to CO shortly.
The move is dependant on employment, and I thought this group might be the
best place to check for openings related to my experience.
So if anyone in the CO area is looking (or knows someone that is) for a
system administrator, please do contact me off list.
Yes my current employer is aware of my plans, so in the same vain, if there
is anyone who is looking to head to NH, let me know that also.
Thanks, and again sorry if I am out of line.

A computer (or internet appliance) in every room has great advantages
(including the bathroom). Yes, Water and elec don't mix, but if you can
connect to your home server, browse the internet, monitor any of the
security cameras, control any of the house lighting, watch tv, listen to
MP3's or other audio connections, popup Caller ID alerts, up to date weather
information, the list just goes on and on. Just think of the possibilities.
It's called automated living or a smart home technology. Think of living
the cartoon Jetsons lifestyle........ today. Just as long as these
appliances don't start thinking for themselves and turn terminator on me.

Well this is a hot topic for me
I have been in my current job for over a year and a half

Got a MCP out of it and gave up
The thing I saw time and time again (While I was unemployed for 8

It's been a while since I've done a hard drive upgrade in a server with

this. The system is a Raid 1 Server using Seagate Backup Exec. Any new

Also, I've been installing several wireless lans in my side business and
they seem to have problems restoring network drives after the connection
is lost. Anyone heard of anything like this. One wireless Lan cannot
connect to shared network drives or shared printers at all but my wired
workstations using the same configurations for TCPIP work fine..using
DHCP from the router to configure settings...one of those hair
