[OT] Network Equipment Storage

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I am just trying to cleanup and
protect things better than the current layout. Some of the maintenance
installations in the past resemble a cluster of 4 types of cable, a switch
and 3 hubs feeding our main production area. One slip up with a piece of
material or water and I'll digging through cable for weeks.

A few people mentioned wireless connections which we are exploring and I was
interested to is if anyone was using tablet PC's yet?

Thanks again,

Michael

Good afternoon all.

I've got a problem with a few users - but not all. I've created a quick
stock enquiry screen in Access to show users certain classes of stock and
any related material to the one selected. The problem I get is that
although the part table shows up fine the partbin table shows up just as
#deleted in every field. I've tried this on a few PCs 1 XP and the others
98. Two are fine and the other two have the #deleted problem.

Has anybody come across this?

You could try to change their ODBC settings to Uncommitted. This will force
the ODBC link to a read-only status. Also, have you applied all fixes from
support to fix the length on fields?

We are expanding into 2-3 other production areas that are not climate
controlled and are looking for cabinets with fans and/or cooling for the
hubs and switches. These are not rack mounted and will be located in the
most central area to serve the clients. Can someone that has used these in
the past recommend a good solution?

Thanks in advance,

Michael,

It might actually be cheaper for you to purchase semi-thin clients that are
fan less and run PcAnywhere to a PC that is kept somewhere in the office.

Monitors just get dirty ...
You can buy membrane keyboards that are virtually indestructible
Mice breed ... I know I've got a box full of old ones that semi-work well
enough for shop floor duty

Michael,
I use cheap Linksys switches mounted at the ceiling in the shop with cable
drops to the data collection stations (summer temps over 85 in the shop and
I'm guessing well over a 100 near the ceiling where the switches are). Heat
doesn't seem to bother them too much unlike a CPU. I get about 3-4 years
out of them before they do finally quit, but they are so covered with oil
and dirt it's surprising they last as long as they do.

Michael,

We use Linksys as well, but we have gone wireless. I have an 2 access
points mounted high on the wall and they work great. This has allowed us to
have mobile data collection stations and to allow the operators to view the
prints on-line. We are going paperless and are using the document links.

I had a problem with 1 of the 2 units which seemed to overheat right away.
I exchanged it for another one and the 2 current ones I have in use have
been going strong for a few months.

Thanks,
Dan

Michael,

We had some used old large electrical boxes laying around.
Drilled some holes.
Installed a fan and filter.
Gasketed the door.
Sealed all other holes.
Instant shop floor protection for electronics.

Are they perfect? No, but the job they do is good enough.
Most dirt is intercepted at the filter.
Our shop environment can have metallic dust and grit, smoke and wind blown dust.
No temperature control except, heat in winter 50 deg. F
PC's inside have been running for 4 years just fine.

Best of all they are really inexpensive.

Rich
