[OT] Printers disappear on certain W9x workstations

We don't use Mcafee, and have printer loss/print driver corruption.

Quick Survey Question: How many of you who have printers disappear from
your Win9x workstations are running McAfee Virus Scan 4.5x?
How many have the printer disappearing problem but don't sue McAfee?

We DO use McAfee Virus Scan 4.5x.

---Below I have pasted the article from the HP website relating to
McAfee...----------- T.F.

This is the ***ONLY*** solution that works!

From McAfee's (Network Assoiciate's) KnowledgeBase:
SolutionID: nai13332
Problem Description: Error: "Spool32.exe has cause an invalid page fault"
After installing VirusScan 4.5x, error occurs when printing and printers
disappear from Printer folder.
Problem Environment:
McAfee VirusScan 4.5.x
Microsoft Windows 9x
Solution:
Windows 95
Update the SPOOLSS.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory. For Windows
95 the original version should be 4.00.950, it should be replaced with
4.03.1212 or higher. This file is available from Microsoft support and is
also included with later releases of Windows 95. You may have this file on
another Windows 95 system. Check the file version of the SPOOLSS.DLL file by
right clicking on it, select properties and then selecting the version tab.
Windows 98
Update the SPOOLSS.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory. Microsoft
has not released an updated DLL for Windows 98. However we (Network
Associates) have tested the SPOOLSS.DLL file from Windows Millennium Edition
(version 4.90.0.3000) on Windows 98 (and 98SE) and found that is file not
only functions properly but also resolves nearly all Spool32 invalid page
fault errors.

I have attached a ZIPped (You'll new an unzipper. WinZip is a free
download - www.winzip.com).

Replace your old SPOOLSS.DLL with this new one from Windows ME.

!!!DO NOT USE THIS WITH WINDOWS 95!!!

Sorry, I can't seem to find the Win95 updated SPOOLSS.DLL.

The easiest way to update the SPOOLSS.DLL on a Win98 box (DO NOT USE THIS
FILE WITH WIN95!) is to use the System File Checker.
Start-Run-SFC-OK
Select Extract one file from disk
Type SPOOLSS.DLL in the filename box-click Start
In the Restore from box type the location of the SPOOLSS.DLL that you've
extracted from the zip.
The Save file in box should say C:\Windows\System
(If you have installed Windows in a different folder than C:\Windows then
replace that part of the path name with your folder.)
This will prompt you to backup the old file (a good thing to do!) to the
C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC folder, then prompt to reboot the machine.

Everything should be printing up rosey after that!

NO MORE SPOOL32 ERRORS!!!!! YEAH!!!!

As I was reading this thread, guess what, our printers went off line.
We
have an NT PDC and a WIN2K Server for the Vantage file server. The
Printers
are HP5SI with jet direct cards. Our hub area was just rebuilt
(yesterday).
I tried the spooler stop/start idea, with no luck. Only a server
restart
cleared up the failure.

I have been watching this thread evolve since yesterday and it's now
time
to
toss in my observations. I have 2 workstations that lose their
printers on
a
consistant basis - both are Win9x workstations with identical hardware
to
15
other PCs that never have the problem. Also, no w2k workstations have
had
the problem. We have affectionately dubbed this phenomenon "the white
screen
of printing death". Only happens AFTER printing a Crystal form (order
ack
in
Customer Service and packing slips on the dock) from Vantage. I have
basically given up trying to troubleshoot the issue. Recently, one of
the
units' hardrive crashed (unrelated to problem). I replaced drive,
reinstalled everything from scratch, and what do you know, the PC has
not
lost the printers once in 2 weeks of normal duty. It may be too early
to
say
problem fixed, but I am watching. I may just go ahead and do the same
for
other machine and see what happens. BTW, still running Vantage
3.00.63.

I just thinks it's extremely interesting how many of us have
experienced
the
same problem that only now is coming into focus. It seems pretty
obvious
to
me that the combination of Vantage/Crystal and possibly a third party
(Microsoft) is creating this conflict. Not so obvious, of course, is

Troy:

It sounds as if DHCP is the common denominator here. I'd recommend
giving
ALL computers and peripherals their own static IP address. I have a
simple
numbering system in an Excel spreadsheet I use to keep track of
everything.
Whenever I need another IP address, I check that, set the address
and
go.
The only problem I have is when I forget to update the spreadsheet.
It
doesn't take very long to be reminded when I bring another IP
address
online
that's already taken.

This never happened until we went to our new server with
Win2000Server.
It
just recently became the Primary Controller. We also have this
problem
where every few days the printers lose their IP address and the
server
can't
see them. It has to do with the DHCP lease being up, but we're not
sure
how
to set them so that they remain the same IP address. I guess we
need a
W2K
Server class.

Back to the printer disappearing... It seems to be happening on the
same
few
workstations, much to the chagrin of those users. I'm sure someone
out
there has seen this problem and learned how to fix it...

Another non-Vantage question: We have a couple of workstations
that
get
plagued with losing their printers. When they reboot, the printers
are
there again. Then later in the day, the printers are not listed
once
again.
Any ideas why?

What a great resource this list is, even beyond Vantage.

If you are using NT4 or 2000 check your event viewer and see what is
causing your Spooler Service to shutdown and go from there. Otherwise just
restart Spooler Service and your printers will magically return! :)

Lee-

We have proven the same solution on NT stations. The problem NEVER
surfaced until a Netware 5 server was added to the rack & (Corporate)
insisted that They should handle printer services.

Update the SPOOLSS.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory. For Windows 95 the original version should be 4.00.950, it should be replaced with 4.03.1212 or higher. This file is available from Microsoft support and is also included with later releases of Windows 95. You may have this file on another Windows 95 system. Check the file version of the SPOOLSS.DLL file by right clicking on it, select properties and then selecting the version tab.
Windows 98
Update the SPOOLSS.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory. Microsoft has not released an updated DLL for Windows 98. However we (Network Associates) have tested the SPOOLSS.DLL file from Windows Millennium Edition (version 4.90.0.3000) on Windows 98 (and 98SE) and found that is file not only functions properly but also resolves nearly all Spool32 invalid page fault errors.

I have attached a ZIPped (You'll new an unzipper. WinZip is a free download - www.winzip.com).

Replace your old SPOOLSS.DLL with this new one from Windows ME.

!!!DO NOT USE THIS WITH WINDOWS 95!!!

Sorry, I can't seem to find the Win95 updated SPOOLSS.DLL.

The easiest way to update the SPOOLSS.DLL on a Win98 box (DO NOT USE THIS FILE WITH WIN95!) is to use the System File Checker.
Start-Run-SFC-OK
Select Extract one file from disk
Type SPOOLSS.DLL in the filename box-click Start
In the Restore from box type the location of the SPOOLSS.DLL that you've extracted from the zip.
The Save file in box should say C:\Windows\System
(If you have installed Windows in a different folder than C:\Windows then replace that part of the path name with your folder.)
This will prompt you to backup the old file (a good thing to do!) to the C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC folder, then prompt to reboot the machine.

Everything should be printing up rosey after that!

NO MORE SPOOL32 ERRORS!!!!! YEAH!!!!

I tried the spooler stop/start idea, with no luck. Only a server restart

I have been watching this thread evolve since yesterday and it's now time
to
toss in my observations. I have 2 workstations that lose their printers on
a
consistant basis - both are Win9x workstations with identical hardware to
15
other PCs that never have the problem. Also, no w2k workstations have had
the problem. We have affectionately dubbed this phenomenon "the white
screen
of printing death". Only happens AFTER printing a Crystal form (order ack
in
Customer Service and packing slips on the dock) from Vantage. I have
basically given up trying to troubleshoot the issue. Recently, one of the
units' hardrive crashed (unrelated to problem). I replaced drive,
reinstalled everything from scratch, and what do you know, the PC has not
lost the printers once in 2 weeks of normal duty. It may be too early to
say
problem fixed, but I am watching. I may just go ahead and do the same for
other machine and see what happens. BTW, still running Vantage 3.00.63.

I just thinks it's extremely interesting how many of us have experienced
the
same problem that only now is coming into focus. It seems pretty obvious
to
me that the combination of Vantage/Crystal and possibly a third party
(Microsoft) is creating this conflict. Not so obvious, of course, is the
solution.

It sounds as if DHCP is the common denominator here. I'd recommend
giving
ALL computers and peripherals their own static IP address. I have a
simple
numbering system in an Excel spreadsheet I use to keep track of
everything.
Whenever I need another IP address, I check that, set the address and
go.
The only problem I have is when I forget to update the spreadsheet. It
doesn't take very long to be reminded when I bring another IP address
online
that's already taken.

This never happened until we went to our new server with Win2000Server.
It
just recently became the Primary Controller. We also have this problem
where every few days the printers lose their IP address and the server
can't
see them. It has to do with the DHCP lease being up, but we're not sure
how
to set them so that they remain the same IP address. I guess we need a

Another non-Vantage question: We have a couple of workstations that
get
plagued with losing their printers. When they reboot, the printers are
there again. Then later in the day, the printers are not listed once
again.
Any ideas why?

What a great resource this list is, even beyond Vantage.

Troy, both of the affected workstation had McAfee Virus scan 4.5 installed
at one time along with many others that never had this issue. However, that
was de-installed in favor of Sophos anti-virus client/server setup. The PC
that I replaced the harddrive on was not reloaded with McAfee and has been
working just fine. That leaves me with just the one W98 machine that
occasionally loses the printers. I followed the linked provided by Jim Moore
("thank you very much" in my best Latka voice I can manage) and am going to
try the remedy posted on the HP website. I will let you know the results.

It appears to me this thread is now dealing with two possibly unrelated
printer issues. The first one (the one that I am dealing with) is that
workstations lose the printers in its Printers folder regardless if the
actual printer is local or networked. The second issue, if I am reading
correctly, is networked printers are dying on the server they are attached
to. With that in mind, I added the [workstation only issue] for this
continuing thread.

The

I tried the spooler stop/start idea, with no luck. Only a server

Not so obvious, of course, is
the
solution.

Then later in the day, the printers are not listed

again.
Any ideas why?

Troy, both of the affected workstation had McAfee Virus scan 4.5 installed
at one time along with many others that never had this issue. However, that
was de-installed in favor of Sophos anti-virus client/server setup. The PC
that I replaced the harddrive on was not reloaded with McAfee and has been
working just fine. That leaves me with just the one W98 machine that
occasionally loses the printers. I followed the linked provided by Jim Moore
("thank you very much" in my best Latka voice I can manage) and am going to
try the remedy posted on the HP website. I will let you know the results.

Quick Survey Question: How many of you who have printers disappear from
your Win9x workstations are running McAfee Virus Scan 4.5x?
How many have the printer disappearing problem but don't sue McAfee?

We DO use McAfee Virus Scan 4.5x.

I occasionally had this anomaly with just one w9x machine. It was recently
replaced with a new w2k machine that inherited the problem so it wasn't the
workstation. The print hub is Intel and it comes with Netport Manager
software which has a reset function, hitting this cures the problem and
restores the printer, so maybe it's the hub.

It's so irregular and I don't consider it merits too much time sourcing a
solution. I haven't assessed when or why it happens but I guess knowing how
to restore it keeps me employed!
