[OT] Slowwwww directory browsing on W2k Server

There can be number of reasons for your problem. First What server
OS are you running? (Win2k, NT 4, Novell, Unix). If you are using
2000 across the board check your DNS and AD configuration. Netbios
is just a oldschool non-routable protocol to use names instead of
IPs. If you use it, it has to be on workstations and servers, not
just the server. I recommend against Netbios. Microsoft now relies
on DNS to resolves names. Wins is also an option, but is just windows
DNS. In a windows 2000 network there is no need for anything other
the TCP/IP protocol suite. Make sure all your computers and servers
have properly registered with your DNS server. Microsoft has DNS
troublshooting guides to help. I have worked on a number of networks
were the DNS server had now entries. Win2k will take other measures
to find your server shares, but thats when things seem to slow.

Ok my network experts. Why does it take so long for W2K Server to respond when I open a directory on the server that has somewhat large files, or when looking at a shared directory on another computer???

It just doesn't seem right. Does active directory have anything to do with it?

Troy,

Are these mapped drives/folders? If so do they respond quicker if you close
and reopen them the second time?

Yes, they are shared, but not mapped necessarily. I'm thinking that yes, they respond quicker the second time. This only happens at the server, though. I share a directory on my Win98 PC and it has HUGE 1GB files in it, but it doesn't take five minutes for the folder to refresh when I open it from another PC. What gives?

Troy,
Are you sure that the problem relates to the file size? See if the problem
is affected by the file size but folder depth, number of files, hard drive
access speed (is it raid) and user name that you're logging in with. Also,
is there anything out of the ordinary about file names used or security
settings on the partition?

The guilty folder is c:\aavantagedailybkup and only has one subfolder \archives. The archives subfolder has about 8 zipped Database files in it.
There are only about 15 files in the c:\aavantagedailybkup folder. Two of those files are the Database Backups, which are about 900MB each. It seems like if there is a Zipped Database file (about 245MB), then things are even slower.

We have 4 SCSI drives (10K spin) which are mirror with Raid 0 (or 1, I forget) as Vantage recommends. The Server is a Dual 1.4Ghz with 1GB Ram. This is happening when logged in as Administrator. We had nearly the exact file setup on our old (dual 450mhz) server with 512MB Ram and never had this problem.

One note about the drive setup... Although each drive is 18GB x 4 (Mirrored = 36MB usable), they are partitioned across the physical drives so that C: is actually smaller that D:. I'm at home and don't remember the exact partition sizes of each.

Have you monitored the server / workstation ?

A couple of options to explore would be :-

- use MMC (right-click My Computer, then Manage) and under System tools
there is Shared folders. See if any files are being opened ?
- use Performance Console (Programs, Administrative Tools) and have a look
at what the processor, network, disks are doing.
- possibly worth a look at your caching settings, right-click the folder
from Explorer, click Sharing, Caching, make sure not ticked for caching.

On your Win98 PC you might also get an idea of what is happening from
Accessories, System Tools, System Monitor.

You would think that for a 5 minute wait there is a lot of something
happening somewhere ...

Yes, they are shared, but not mapped necessarily. I'm thinking that yes,
they respond quicker the second time. This only happens at the server,
though. I share a directory on my Win98 PC and it has HUGE 1GB files in it,
but it doesn't take five minutes for the folder to refresh when I open it
from another PC. What gives?

Ok my network experts. Why does it take so long for W2K Server to respond
when I open a directory on the server that has somewhat large files, or
when
looking at a shared directory on another computer???

It just doesn't seem right. Does active directory have anything to do

I'm not sure where the Win98 thing comes in here, because I may be sitting at the server, with no PC's connected to that directory, and it still is very slow ... the first time I access that directory.

This folder is an exclusive share, meaning only administrators, so there would be no other PC's accessing that folder. Although I am ABLE to get files from my Win98 PC, I can be sitting at the Server with my Win98 PC idle, and the directory will be slow.
--
I'll take a look at the Performance Console... Good suggestion.

And I'll look at the Cache settings as you suggest as well.

The guilty folder is c:\aavantagedailybkup and only has one subfolder
\archives. The archives subfolder has about 8 zipped Database files in it.
There are only about 15 files in the c:\aavantagedailybkup folder. Two of
those files are the Database Backups, which are about 900MB each. It seems
like if there is a Zipped Database file (about 245MB), then things are even
slower.

We have 4 SCSI drives (10K spin) which are mirror with Raid 0 (or 1, I
forget) as Vantage recommends. The Server is a Dual 1.4Ghz with 1GB Ram.
This is happening when logged in as Administrator. We had nearly the exact
file setup on our old (dual 450mhz) server with 512MB Ram and never had this
problem.

One note about the drive setup... Although each drive is 18GB x 4 (Mirrored
= 36MB usable), they are partitioned across the physical drives so that C:
is actually smaller that D:. I'm at home and don't remember the exact
partition sizes of each.

This server was supposed to be FASTER, not Sloooowwwwwerrrrr.

Troy,
Are you sure that the problem relates to the file size? See if the
problem
is affected by the file size but folder depth, number of files, hard drive
access speed (is it raid) and user name that you're logging in with. Also,
is there anything out of the ordinary about file names used or security
settings on the partition?

Troy,
We had a similar problem with workstations in a second building over a
fiber optic line. Couldn't figure out why directories took forever to come
up. Six months later a user happened to notice one of these machines had a
map to a shared zip drive that no longer functioned. I new the drive was
bad but it didn't occur to me that it would slow down directory displays. I
removed the map and that fixed things. I don't know if its relevant but
just thought I would mention it.

Maybe a long shot but given the large zile size and being Zip files could
there be a virus scanning issue? Is the folder one you exclude? I know
when I sometimes pull up a drive in explorer it will pause for a while and I
am pretty sure it is due to NAV scanning a large Access database in one of
the folders. Zip files can take longer to scan as well due to embedded
"unzip" in the scan.

Ok my network experts. Why does it take so long for W2K Server to respond
when I open a directory on the server that has somewhat large files, or when
looking at a shared directory on another computer???

It just doesn't seem right. Does active directory have anything to do with
it?

Win 2000 has options to automatically compress files it thinks are
inactive, as well as some "indexing" service that runs by default (at least
the workstation version.) Could one of those be the culprit?

Do you have your anti-virus software configured to check archives? Another
issue may be zip software trying to analyze the zip files as the directory
is opened.

Hope this helps,

Yes, they are shared, but not mapped necessarily. I'm thinking that yes,
they respond quicker the second time. This only happens at the server,
though. I share a directory on my Win98 PC and it has HUGE 1GB files in
it,
but it doesn't take five minutes for the folder to refresh when I open it
from another PC. What gives?

Troy,
I thought this was just my problem, but I guess not. We just got in
two new pcs with W2K pro. Being P4 machines I expected great performance.
However when it came to accessing directories on the network it dogged! One
directory with 12K of files took over 3 minutes to come up. After spending
the last several days searching Microsoft's web site and trying different
patches, etc. I found a reference to the use of NETBIOS and thought what
the hell, I've tried everything else. So on the W2K pro pc I went and added
the NETBIOS protocol and now that 12K directory loads up in seconds vs. 3
minutes. Let me know if this solves your issues too.

Troy,

I had this same problem when I started using W2K. My memory is really
vague though. I just checked and I don't have NETBIOS installed. Seems
like I had to make a registry edit. Something about refreshing the
directory.......I just don't remember. Hope this will jog someone's memory
somewhere. I'll look in TechNet to see if I can find something.

Troy,

Correction. My NetBIOS setting is "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP
server" This is from TCP/IP properties, Advanced Settings, WINS tab.

We had a similar problem when we got our new NT server (sp6) It was
browsing directories slower than our old 133mhz novell box, until our
computer consultant found a registry hack to fix it.

"Something about refreshing the directory.......I just don't remember"
definitely rings a bell. I think I remember the words "TCP/IP Cache" as
well...

when I open a directory on the server that has somewhat large files, or
when
looking at a shared directory on another computer???

It just doesn't seem right. Does active directory have anything to do
with
it?
