My understanding is that if you are running DHCP on a Windows 2000 server
and NOT running Active Directory, the workstations do not resister
themselves properly with DHCP. You need to make some changes to the
workstations for this to happen. This is assuming you are set up as a
domain.
If you go to your DHCP server and open DHCP, look at "Address Leases" under
"Scope". Check out your workstation names and see how they are listed. If
the name is just the name of the workstation like "data1.", then they are
not correct. It should be "data1.'your domain name'.com" or net or
whatever. Mine would be "cole.reederkline.com"
In order to correct this problem, go to each workstation and log in as
administrator or whatever account you have that has privileges. Open up the
Local Area Connection and pick Properties. Under Properties pick Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, then pick Advanced. Under Advanced TCP/IP
Settings pick the DNS tab. In the box for 'DNS suffix for this connection"
you should put 'your domain name.com' or net or whatever yours is. Mine is
"reederkline.com". Make sure the boxes for "Register this connection's
addresses in DNS" and "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration"
are both checked. It is then best at this point to reboot the workstations
although with 2000 and XP you really don't have to.
You can make the workstation re-register with DNS immediately by opening a
Command Prompt and typing: ipconfig/registerdns
Then, go back to your DHCP server and see if the registration is correct.
This should really help your network lookups. If you still are having
problems, there are some things to look at on your DHCP server. Let me know
how it goes.
By the way, on NT4.0 you would just put your domain name in the '"Domain:"
box and you must reboot NT4.0.
Hope this helps,
Dave Cole

I do have DHCP and DNS setup on a Windows 2000 member server with an NT4
SBS as the primary domain controller. Can you give us some insight as to
what exactly needs to be different in our setup ?

By any chance are you running DHCP and/or DNS on a Windows 2000 Server
that is part of a domain controlled by Windows NT 4.0 Primary server?
If so, I think you have to set DHCP up just a little differently on the
work stations so that they register properly.

I've been doing a lot of searching on the net and the major cause I can
determine is if you have a XP pro joining a domain and the domain
controller (most information is referring to a 2000 server) is not
configured or incorrectly configured for DNS. It is apparently vital to
the network performance with XP. I will be testing the articles I have
found and will leave feedback Wednesday.

Hi all,
Just wanted to add my two cents worth on XP Pro. We have recently added
a labtop with XP Pro and have experienced the same performance lag as
some of you mentionned. The machine is a Dell latitude with a 1.6 ghz
pentium processor with 256mb of ram. The machine runs a lot slower than
most of my win 2000 pc's. It is very slow to open up network folders
and seems to stall randomly for no reason when you are clicking from
menu to menu in Explorer or any office applications that are opened !
The antivirus I am running is Norton Corporate 7.6. The machine is very
quick to boot though, almost twice as fast as win 2000. So far I haven't
been too impressed by XP pro.
