XP Pro very slow ! ! I'm BAAAAAACCCCkk!

Hi Guys !! I'm back in the saddle again. Ran across some things that relate
to this thread! WinXP checks with the scheduler of the remote machine to
see if any tasks need updated there is a registry hack to stop this, I'll
bring it in tomorrow and share. Also as far as the "servhost" issue, Her
Gates has determined that there are many services that should be running. I
have a list that I will also share tomorrow that itemizes the purpose and
function of the default XP pro services. I have XP pro on all my home
systems and have gotten good results from triming out the services list, and
turning off the scheduler search. more latter though dealing with a weeks
worth of pile for now.

Hi all,

Just wanted to add my two cents worth on XP Pro. We have recently added
a labtop with XP Pro and have experienced the same performance lag as
some of you mentionned. The machine is a Dell latitude with a 1.6 ghz
pentium processor with 256mb of ram. The machine runs a lot slower than
most of my win 2000 pc's. It is very slow to open up network folders
and seems to stall randomly for no reason when you are clicking from
menu to menu in Explorer or any office applications that are opened !
The antivirus I am running is Norton Corporate 7.6. The machine is very
quick to boot though, almost twice as fast as win 2000. So far I haven't
been too impressed by XP pro.

Something else to try is to be logged on as an administrator and right click
on my computer. Go to properties, Advanced, performance settings and click
the radio button for best performance.

IÂ’ve been doing a lot of searching on the net and the major cause I can
determine is if you have a XP pro joining a domain and the domain controller
(most information is referring to a 2000 server) is not configured or
incorrectly configured for DNS. It is apparently vital to the network
performance with XP. I will be testing the articles I have found and will
leave feedback Wednesday.

HI All,
I am curious. Throughout many posts, I see references to XP, Win2000 and NT
workstations JOINING a domain. Why are you wanting these clients to join a
domain? Will they be materially participating in network security or
resource management? If not, I suggest the client should be configured to
be part of a workgroup, not the domain. All my workstations with W2K Pro or
XP Pro are configured that way and I have no performance issues. What
advantages are there to joining a domain versus a workgroup - I confess to
ignorance here so be kind.

Regards,
Jim Stetter

YES, YES. That's exactly what ours our doing... Opening network folders, even just clicking START sometimes with nothing else running. Long lag times. What's up with this? I'm curious to hear more from Jim Carnes on the Domain information.

One good thing... The news is spreading around the company and no one wants a new computer anymore, they want their old one back. Could save us big $$ in hardware. :-)

Still...

XP is the way to go. If you have everything configured properly on your
network and workstation, it is MUCH faster than W9x and, from what I've
experienced, is a bit quicker than W2K. Not to mention the awesome boot
time.

My understanding is that if you are running DHCP on a Windows 2000 server
and NOT running Active Directory, the workstations do not resister
themselves properly with DHCP. You need to make some changes to the
workstations for this to happen. This is assuming you are set up as a
domain.

If you go to your DHCP server and open DHCP, look at "Address Leases" under
"Scope". Check out your workstation names and see how they are listed. If
the name is just the name of the workstation like "data1.", then they are
not correct. It should be "data1.'your domain name'.com" or net or
whatever. Mine would be "cole.reederkline.com"

In order to correct this problem, go to each workstation and log in as
administrator or whatever account you have that has privileges. Open up the
Local Area Connection and pick Properties. Under Properties pick Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, then pick Advanced. Under Advanced TCP/IP
Settings pick the DNS tab. In the box for 'DNS suffix for this connection"
you should put 'your domain name.com' or net or whatever yours is. Mine is
"reederkline.com". Make sure the boxes for "Register this connection's
addresses in DNS" and "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration"
are both checked. It is then best at this point to reboot the workstations
although with 2000 and XP you really don't have to.

You can make the workstation re-register with DNS immediately by opening a
Command Prompt and typing: ipconfig/registerdns

Then, go back to your DHCP server and see if the registration is correct.
This should really help your network lookups. If you still are having
problems, there are some things to look at on your DHCP server. Let me know
how it goes.

By the way, on NT4.0 you would just put your domain name in the '"Domain:"
box and you must reboot NT4.0.

Hope this helps,

Dave Cole

By any chance are you running DHCP and/or DNS on a Windows 2000 Server
that is part of a domain controlled by Windows NT 4.0 Primary server?

If so, I think you have to set DHCP up just a little differently on the
work stations so that they register properly.

I've been doing a lot of searching on the net and the major cause I can
determine is if you have a XP pro joining a domain and the domain
controller (most information is referring to a 2000 server) is not
configured or incorrectly configured for DNS. It is apparently vital to
the network performance with XP. I will be testing the articles I have
found and will leave feedback Wednesday.

Dave,
I'm trying to understand our situation in light of what you wrote below. We have a domain on the Win200Server called LIBERTY. Our Internet domain is libertyelectronics.com.
Our WinXP workstations run slowly as described in previous emails. At the server: most workstations are listed in DHCP/Scope as jdoe.libertyelectronics.com. However, the XP Pro workstations are listed as jdoe.liberty.libertyelectronics.com. At the workstation, there is nothing listed under "DNS suffix for this connection". Also, "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" is checked, but "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration" is not checked.

How does this situation fit with what you are describing?

Troy,

I have never worked with one domain name for the internet and a second
internal domain name. But, lets see what we can do.

First, two questions.

Are you having any network response problems when trying to get a directory
from a server?

If so, are all of your machines slow or can you group them as fast or slow
by the way they are registered in DNS.

Another scenario - what if you are not using DNS? In our situation we don't
pass DNS entries through DHCP as a way to control internet access. If
somebody needs internet access then I manually enter the DNS numbers and
register the domain at the workstation. We also don't have a local DNS
server and instead use those provided by our ISP (too many TLAs!!!)

This is just kind of a "what if" question on my part. I haven't seen any
speed problems with XP Pro stations here but we only have two so far. The
only Windows 2000 server is just a member server. All domain controllers,
DHCP servers, etc. are still NT4.

Rick
Dave,
XP Pro machines are the first and only machines that have the 'lag times' relating to opening up network folders (at times). There are also lag times related to simply clicking the START button, or opening Explorer as well. All other machines (mostly Win95 and Win98 - which all log onto the LIBERTY domain) have great access to the network.

Does that answer your question?

Dave,
I'm trying to understand our situation in light of what you wrote below.
We have a domain on the Win200Server called LIBERTY. Our Internet domain is
libertyelectronics.com.
Our WinXP workstations run slowly as described in previous emails. At the
server: most workstations are listed in DHCP/Scope as
jdoe.libertyelectronics.com. However, the XP Pro workstations are listed as
jdoe.liberty.libertyelectronics.com. At the workstation, there is nothing
listed under "DNS suffix for this connection". Also, "Register this
connection's addresses in DNS" is checked, but "Use this connection's DNS
suffix in DNS registration" is not checked.

How does this situation fit with what you are describing?

My understanding is that if you are running DHCP on a Windows 2000 server
and NOT running Active Directory, the workstations do not resister
themselves properly with DHCP. You need to make some changes to the
workstations for this to happen. This is assuming you are set up as a
domain.

If you go to your DHCP server and open DHCP, look at "Address Leases"
under

Open up
the
Local Area Connection and pick Properties. Under Properties pick Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, then pick Advanced. Under Advanced TCP/IP
Settings pick the DNS tab. In the box for 'DNS suffix for this
connection"
you should put 'your domain name.com' or net or whatever yours is. Mine
is
"reederkline.com". Make sure the boxes for "Register this connection's
addresses in DNS" and "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS
registration"
are both checked. It is then best at this point to reboot the
workstations
although with 2000 and XP you really don't have to.

Let me
know
how it goes.

By the way, on NT4.0 you would just put your domain name in the '"Domain:"
box and you must reboot NT4.0.

Hope this helps,

Dave Cole

I do have DHCP and DNS setup on a Windows 2000 member server with an NT4
SBS as the primary domain controller. Can you give us some insight as to
what exactly needs to be different in our setup ?

Turn-off Antivirus software and see if there is a difference in performance.

Boy this is getting deep fast. Good point Rick. In our situation, on Win9x workstations, we enter the two DNS settings to give a workstation Internet Access. On the XP Pro workstations, they got Internet access 'automatically'. They found the DNS entries for internet and grabbed right on to it -- which kind of surprised us.

Making it deeper.......

Same thing happens to me with RAS. I try to keep our road mechanics from
having internet access through dial-up because there is only one modem for
about 15 to share. It seems that the dial-up client picks up settings from
the RAS server rather than DHCP like it is supposed to. Even though I don't
have DNS servers entered into their dial-up networking connections it still
picks them up somewhere and instead I have to uncheck "use default gateway
on remote network".

I wonder if your XP Pro station grabbed the DNS numbers from you DHCP server
in the same way. I think I went into the properties for TCP/IP and checked
"disable DNS" or something like that.

Always something!

Rick
The main reason is that you have only one place you have to go to manager
all your users and accounts, one of your domain servers. With a workgroup,
if user Pete needed to log onto 15 different computers, then the network
administrator must go to EACH of the 15 computers and create an account for
Pete. Then, any time anything changes concerning Pete's account, you must
go to each computer and make the changes. With a domain, you only need to
add his account and any access privileges at the domain sever.

There are many, many more reasons to use domains. Check out the following

HI All,
I am curious.

I've been doing a lot of searching on the net and the major cause I can
determine is if you have a XP pro joining a domain and the domain
controller
(most information is referring to a 2000 server) is not configured or
incorrectly configured for DNS. It is apparently vital to the network
performance with XP. I will be testing the articles I have found and will
leave feedback Wednesday.

Rick,

I can't help you with that scenario. I never have tried it. We use
Microsoft ISA server as our firewall and proxy server. Everything is pretty
much automated after that.

As to not using DNS, it only matters if you are considering going to all
Windows 2000 servers. At that point you MUST be running Active Directory
and DNS. They give you no choice on that matter.

Why go to Windows 2000 servers? Ease of management and performance,
performance, performance. I upgraded two old PII 300 servers to Windows
2000 and now they run tons faster. Saved us the price of replacing these
machines.

Troy,

How much lag time are you talking about? On my XP Pro workstation, 1.3 GHz
with 256mb memory, it take less than half a second to open a share on a
server with 31,438 cad files in 1,252 folders. On a XP Pro workstation
(used for data collection), 350 MHz AMD K6-2 with 128mb memory, it takes
less that 1 second to open the same share. This is on a 100mb switched
Ethernet LAN with fiber between the switches.

Dave,
XP Pro machines are the first and only machines that have the 'lag times'
relating to opening up network folders (at times). There are also lag times
related to simply clicking the START button, or opening Explorer as well.
All other machines (mostly Win95 and Win98 - which all log onto the LIBERTY
domain) have great access to the network.

Does that answer your question?

Troy,

I have never worked with one domain name for the internet and a second
internal domain name. But, lets see what we can do.

First, two questions.

Are you having any network response problems when trying to get a
directory
from a server?

If so, are all of your machines slow or can you group them as fast or slow
by the way they are registered in DNS.

Dave,
I'm trying to understand our situation in light of what you wrote
below.
We have a domain on the Win200Server called LIBERTY. Our Internet domain
is
libertyelectronics.com.
Our WinXP workstations run slowly as described in previous emails. At the
server: most workstations are listed in DHCP/Scope as
jdoe.libertyelectronics.com. However, the XP Pro workstations are listed
as
jdoe.liberty.libertyelectronics.com. At the workstation, there is nothing
listed under "DNS suffix for this connection". Also, "Register this
connection's addresses in DNS" is checked, but "Use this connection's DNS
suffix in DNS registration" is not checked.

How does this situation fit with what you are describing?

My understanding is that if you are running DHCP on a Windows 2000
server
and NOT running Active Directory, the workstations do not resister
themselves properly with DHCP. You need to make some changes to the
workstations for this to happen. This is assuming you are set up as a
domain.

If you go to your DHCP server and open DHCP, look at "Address Leases"
under
"Scope". Check out your workstation names and see how they are listed.
If
the name is just the name of the workstation like "data1.", then they
are
not correct. It should be "data1.'your domain name'.com" or net or
whatever. Mine would be "cole.reederkline.com"

In order to correct this problem, go to each workstation and log in as
administrator or whatever account you have that has privileges. Open up
the
Local Area Connection and pick Properties. Under Properties pick
Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, then pick Advanced. Under Advanced TCP/IP
Settings pick the DNS tab. In the box for 'DNS suffix for this
connection"
you should put 'your domain name.com' or net or whatever yours is. Mine
is
"reederkline.com". Make sure the boxes for "Register this connection's
addresses in DNS" and "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS
registration"
are both checked. It is then best at this point to reboot the
workstations
although with 2000 and XP you really don't have to.

You can make the workstation re-register with DNS immediately by opening
a
Command Prompt and typing: ipconfig/registerdns

Then, go back to your DHCP server and see if the registration is
correct.
This should really help your network lookups. If you still are having
problems, there are some things to look at on your DHCP server. Let me
know
how it goes.

By the way, on NT4.0 you would just put your domain name in the
'"Domain:"
box and you must reboot NT4.0.

Hope this helps,

By any chance are you running DHCP and/or DNS on a Windows 2000 Server
that is part of a domain controlled by Windows NT 4.0 Primary server?

If so, I think you have to set DHCP up just a little differently on the
work stations so that they register properly.
