Here's another idea for you to ponder.
If you are running anti-virus software on a server set it to ONLY scan files
that are being written TO the server. IE. Incoming files only. There
should be no reason to scan outgoing files from a server that is clean and
protected from inbound traffic. If you do this you will still protect your
servers and your files without adding overhead to the retrieval process from
client PC's. To put it another way - with your anti-virus software set to
incoming only on the server for all practical purposes it will appear to be
turned OFF from the client PC's perspective. This has a HUGE impact on
performance when accessing files from a server.
Along the same line of thought. On your client PC's - Set your anti-virus
software to scan floppy drives, CD-ROMS, email, etc to the hilt. But do not
scan network drives. The theory being that if you protect the local inputs
to the PC then you are done. Keep in mind that your servers are set above
to only output clean files so your PC's can "Trust" input from your servers.
Together these settings can radically improve network performance.
Mind you - on my dedicated Exchange server and run my anti-virus software at
it's MAX settings for inbound and outbound traffic since I consider it the
most dangerous in terms of virus propagation.
One note of warning. If you are running INNOCULATEIT from CA ... On the
server side "Inbound" is traffic coming INTO the server which makes sense.
However, on the PC side "Inbound" is traffic going OUT to the servers.
It's backwards, very stupid, and it took me 6 or 7 calls to CA tech support
before I found someone to admit to it.

Todd wins the prize! It's the blasted Virus scanner. When I disable the
virus scanner on the Server, the thing zips right through the files one by
one, it opens the directory quickly, etc. etc. As soon as the Virus scanner
is enabled again, it bogs right down.
Now if I can convinve the network admin. to keep the virus scanner OFF on
the server... fat chance. As my engineer friend says... It's the anti-virus
software that's the REAL VIRUS.

Maybe a long shot but given the large zile size and being Zip files could
there be a virus scanning issue? Is the folder one you exclude? I know
when I sometimes pull up a drive in explorer it will pause for a while and
I
am pretty sure it is due to NAV scanning a large Access database in one of
the folders. Zip files can take longer to scan as well due to embedded
"unzip" in the scan.
