Virus scan

To add a little more to Thad's excellent response, corporate versions give
you a lot more flexibility on how to handle your files. For instance I can
block e-mail attachments at the Exchange server based on file extension.
So, even if they aren't infected I can keep unwanted file types out of here
like mp3, avi, exe, etc. Off the top of my head I would say I've caught
maybe 50 instances of worms trying to get in here in the last 3 months.

Also many corporate versions include consoles in which you can push
definition and product upgrades to the clients without have to visit each
PC.

Rick
I was just wondering if you would need special virus scan software for a
server versus a regular workstation.

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks
Technically, no. If you only want to scan the files that are on the server.
However, some AV companies have in their licensing requirements that the
workstation version of the software is not allowed to be installed on a
server.

Yes, you can install server-side Anti-virus software that intercepts any harmful code before it reaches the clients. This also requires a subscription to continuously update the signature-files (up-to-date viruslists).

It is also possible (recommended? , it depends) to let the server intercept any emailattachments so that none reach the clients. In most cases this would introduce problems (if your work requires reception of files), but some companies can do this.

I would also imagine that for a live server, using an AV client designed for
a workstation would be more likely to hamper system performance than a
server version that's optimised for heavier use.

However, if you only scanned files written to the server, rather than
scanning every file read, that would help performance-wise whether or not
you are using a client or server AV package.

How many users are connected to the server you are wishing to install AV on?

Chad,
Yes, you can buy a wide assortment of server based virus software that
is very different than that for an individual workstation. If you go to our
Yahoo groups and do a search on virus software you'll get a good discussion
of the most popular brands (or variants). Also, on your TEST message, you
forgot the long annoying,

ooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOooooOOOOOoWWEEEEEEEEEWWEEEEEEEEEEEewwwwEEEEEE that
should precede every "This has Been a Test"

I would strongly recommend getting a client-server antivirus package which
auto-updates the definitions on the clients, and making sure you have a way
of scanning e-mails for viruses before viruses get to the client. We use
NAV corporate edition, though there are definitely other viable solutions on
the market that cost a bit less.

If you put a workstation anti virus client on the server, all the server is
doing is scanning the files that users write to the server. You are
basically offering your users no more protection then they had before. You
do not prevent a virus that is located on the client from deleting files on
the server. E-Mails are not being scanned before they get to the users.
(e-mails are by far the most popular medium for virus distribution.)

There have been many viruses written recently that will open up a system for
remote exploitation. In other words, if the client gets infected, a remote
hacker could potentially exploit the users system, and wreak as much havoc
on your network as the user themself could if they were hell-bent on causing
damage to your company.

Server Anti Virus software is indeed intitially expensive, though ours has
already paid for itself. When we first installed the software on our 30 or
so user network, two years ago, 35 ocurrences of 7 different viruses were
found on the network. All of the clients had client-side antivirus
software, though the definitions weren't current.

Now, Norton Corporate regularly filters out virus infected messages sent to
our exchange server. Had any one of them gotten through and propagated
itself through our network, we would have lost at least twice as much in
productivity than we initially spent on the software.

So in other words, workstation virus software alone is hardly the most
cost-effective virus solution for your network (given the risk). If you had
5 users, I'd say install client side virus software, and go to each pc and
update it weekly. However, given you have 25-30 users, the time you would
save not having to manually update virus signatures weekly is definitely
worth the cost of a server based AV solution.

Weekly updates might not even be enough. If I had my druthers it would be
at least every other day.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html Reports three
brand-new virus strains being intercepted just in the last 7 days.
