OT: Symantec Corp Edition Antivirus Ver. 9.0

To carry this thread on in a slightly different direction:

About 4 years ago I purchased Trend Micro's Scanmail for Exchange, Office
Scan, and ServerProtect. I have been getting pattern AND scan engine
upgrades. Trend recently had a version update which required me to download
and install basically the entire latest release of the commercial product.
I am upgrading my network from NT4 to W2K3 and this morning I was able to
install and run this product on my test W2K3 network, updating and all...

When I bought the suite I was supposed to get 1 year of updates included,
but I have never been charged. I called their tech support last month with
an unrelated question, and nobody mentioned anything about paying for
support or for continued patches and updates.

I kind of feel bad. The Trend Micro Suite has saved our butts time after
time again. I wouldn't mind paying them, just for the peace of mind and
sincere appreciation.

Now I wonder; do I just have a magical serial number, granting me free
updates and upgrades for life? Or do other Trend Micro users have the same
experience? Not that I am complaining...

What should I do? Upgrade to 9.0 or switch to another antivirus.
I am concerned about the new Java plugin required by Symantec.
How well does Java work with Vantage? Is there any risk to having the
Java Plugin running on all the client machines. What else besides
exclusions will have to be done to get Symantec to work with Vantage?

I like the way that Liveupdate retrieves antivirus files from the net
to be pushed out to the connected clients. Does Panda do this?

Anyway the change is huge. The whole company has to shutdown to do
the upgrade. It is best done during tech support hours just incase.

I have updated to Version 9 of Corp Edition and it is working just fine.
It also detects spyware and adware and has helped me detect and
completely remove these threats from a few machines already. I would
recommend it. The only thing to note is if you are upgrading from
earlier Corp Edition server you must uninstall the AV Server and
reinstall 9.0 fresh. It does not affect your clients at all. They stay
intact and will recognize the 9.0 server when install is complete. Do
Not try to Upgrade the server install, it will not work. Other than that
install was very easy. Pushed 9.0 clients out to everyone from the
server. Whole site of 100+ users upgraded and done in less than a day.

I plan to upgrade. We are paid up for another year or more so I can't see being allowed to buy something else. Unless of course there is some warning to the contrary from Epicor. I thought Vantage already used some Java component(s). I may be wrong but I thought somewhere on the way to 6.0 I saw something about it being installed/upgraded or whatever. If not, then why would Vantage have any problem with a Java plugin? We have a lot of other software, including portals for customer sites, that require Java and it has had no impact on Vantage.

I am very anxious to obtain some of the new features as well as (presumably) a fix for a serious bug in the filtering "match list" features. I have tried unsuccessfuly to get a patch from Symantec for 8.6 so was hoping it was fixed in the 9.0 release. If it worked (without filtering out OK messages) it would really stop a lot of spam "at the door".

As for the upgrade process....I have not seen any details, just the "serial number notice". Did you get the ugprade info from their web site or was it in the download or CD distribution?

I have put off my upgrade from the 8.x version to 9.0 because of some
problems I've read about.
I also wanted the adware detection feature. The problem I've read about is
that the clients will get an Outlook error when the new client is installed.
Symantec has provided a tool to correct the problem.

I attempted to license and download, but the session locked up on me. I
called Symantec and they said they were doing maintenance on their
server this morning ( 9:47 am). I would think they would do such things
on off hours. I have put off the download process until tomorrow.

How well does Java work with Vantage? Is there any risk to having the
Java Plugin running on all the client machines. What else besides
exclusions will have to be done to get Symantec to work with Vantage?

I like the way that Liveupdate retrieves antivirus files from the net
to be pushed out to the connected clients. Does Panda do this?

Anyway the change is huge. The whole company has to shutdown to do
the upgrade. It is best done during tech support hours just incase.

"serial number notice". Did you get the ugprade info from their web
site or was it in the download or CD distribution?

Todd,

I've been using Computer Associates eTrust and have been very happy with it.
You can push out to the client - setup groups with different attributes - pull and push signatures etc. Force scans, Force downloads, Disable the capability of disabling the realtime protection - or allow temporary changes - so that the client will be returned to the proper running configuration, because you know they will forget.
Small foot print and not much of a CPU hog.

Best thing though is only one time charge. Virus updates are free for the life of the product.
30 nodes = $313.69

That sounds great. I hope their eTrust software was better than their tape backup software. Licensing was a pain and we were always getting errors. It finally died and so did our loyalty to it.

I've been using Computer Associates eTrust and have been very happy with it.
You can push out to the client - setup groups with different attributes - pull and push signatures etc. Force scans, Force downloads, Disable the capability of disabling the realtime protection - or allow temporary changes - so that the client will be returned to the proper running configuration, because you know they will forget.
Small foot print and not much of a CPU hog.

Best thing though is only one time charge. Virus updates are free for the life of the product.
30 nodes = $313.69

A penny saved...

I plan to upgrade. We are paid up for another year or more so I can't
see being allowed to buy something else. Unless of course there is some
warning to the contrary from Epicor. I thought Vantage already used
some Java component(s). I may be wrong but I thought somewhere on the
way to 6.0 I saw something about it being installed/upgraded or
whatever. If not, then why would Vantage have any problem with a Java
plugin? We have a lot of other software, including portals for customer
sites, that require Java and it has had no impact on Vantage.

I am very anxious to obtain some of the new features as well as
(presumably) a fix for a serious bug in the filtering "match list"
features. I have tried unsuccessfuly to get a patch from Symantec for
8.6 so was hoping it was fixed in the 9.0 release. If it worked
(without filtering out OK messages) it would really stop a lot of spam
"at the door".

As for the upgrade process....I have not seen any details, just the
"serial number notice". Did you get the ugprade info from their web
site or was it in the download or CD distribution?

Hi Everyone,

What should I do? Upgrade to 9.0 or switch to another antivirus.
I am concerned about the new Java plugin required by Symantec.
How well does Java work with Vantage? Is there any risk to having the
Java Plugin running on all the client machines. What else besides
exclusions will have to be done to get Symantec to work with Vantage?

I like the way that Liveupdate retrieves antivirus files from the net
to be pushed out to the connected clients. Does Panda do this?

Anyway the change is huge. The whole company has to shutdown to do
the upgrade. It is best done during tech support hours just incase.
