(OT) Zebra Print Head Life Cycle

When I worked in an aluminum plant (harsh environment) we went
through heads fairly often, however that seems a bit excessive. When
replacing the print head (at least in the S600 series) an Ohmeter is
required to set the base 'temperature'. I'm not sure if that applies
to the model you are using. We later gave up on the Zebra printers
and went to the SATO brand as the heads are made of ceramic. We ran
1 printer with 3 computers pumping out labels on it and only had a
belt wear out after 3 years. A new belt was 15.00 and the print head
was still in great shape.

I was just told we need yet another new print head in our Zebra 4M Plus. Third
print head in the last 5 months at several hundred $$$ each.

What kind of print head life span are you Zebra printer users experiencing?

We print maybe 200 labels per day. Standard AIAG 4x6 labels with bar-coded and
human readable data. Direct thermal process, not thermal transfer. All standard
stuff. We also regularly clean the print head per Zebra's instructions.

I feel a print head should be lasting much longer than this but would like some
real life users to confirm this before I yell at our service vendor and/or
Zebra.

We have changed ours once in four years. Come to think of it at roughly the 2 year mark so we are probably due. We print at least that many similar type labels. I am not sure how often (or if ever!) the head is cleaned. My guess would be at each new roll. My prior experience with Thermal Transfer is that heads last a LOT longer with Direct Thermal (less wax goop buildup) and require a lot less attention.

When we changed label vendors we were told to watch out for cheap labels that tended to mess up the head, Also to keep a roll of "real" Zebra labels around for at least the duration of the warranty so if there was service required we could swap that roll back in and avoid finger pointing. Could be you have more of a media issue. But I would definitely grill the maintenance provider - 3 in five months is rediculous.
