Part Classes vs. Product Groups

Exactly, if you look at the setup for a product group, the G/L accounts you
want to set up are for AR and for part classes the accounts are for AP.

well, i understood that both Product Group & Part
Class is the Financial & Mfg linkage! the Product
Group determined the AR whereas the Part Class
determined the AP in financial module!

I am being told to enter the exact same categories for BOTH Part Classes
and Product Groups - this seems so redundant.

How have the rest of you set these two modules up and why?

Thanks,

Sue Iverson

I've always understood Product Groups to be setup for Financial reporting
purposes and part classes to be set up for Inventory reporting purposes.

Actually product GROUPS are more appropriate to finished and saleable parts
part CLASSES are more appropriate for purchased items, there are GL accounts
that can be linked to your group and class entries. However, I've used
groups without GL account entries to define large groups of items. For
example: We have an assortment of raw materials to make products. These
raw materials are grouped under raw materials enmass. (blank GL accounts)
Then I use the class to itemize the types of raw materials. The accounting
department handles the assignment of GL numbers to both class and groups.
It makes it easy to pull a report on JUST raw materials (or whatever) an
only have to filter on one code.
