ok, let me look at that and see if there is a BPM someplace setting it. I haven't dealt with those yet. Have been focused on BAQ's, Dashboards and Crystal reports...

I need to let the Whse Manager have access to Part Maintenance to only
change fields on a single tab (Plants) to basically change the min,
max, safety, weight bin etc.

I do not want to allow to change any other fields or to add/delete
records.

What is the best way to accomplish this? Field and Process Security
seem pretty extreme.

Mike
What about a customisation using BeforeFieldChange?

Maybe if you listed each field he's allowed to change followed by a
Case Else to cover everything he's not, something like:

Case "MinQty"
Case "MaxQty"
if PartForm.Session.UserID = "whse.manager" then
// Allowed to change
end if

Case Else
if PartForm.Session.UserID = "whse.manager" then
messagebox.show("You do not have permission to amend this
field." + chr(13) + "Please change it back.", "Error.",
MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error)
Throw new UIException()
end if

Nigel.

We (and I would expect most companies) have the same issue. We ended up creating 3 customized versions of Part Maintenance.

Each has the displayed fields tailored to suit the job function:

One only showing Inventory control related field data, one only showing Planning related data, and one essentially 'full blown' version for Engineering so all basic info is filled out using defualt values during initial part creation.

Each is deployed on a different menu tailored to only be accessed by the target users.

Robert,

How do you handle the customization for the context menus? I have done the same thing but I can't keep the people from getting to the full blown maintenance if they right click the part number from another application like Order Tracker. The context menu takes them to the normal part maintenance.

I believe. You will have to set up security for that menu so your users
cannot access that one. Then create other context menus for your customized
part entry screen. The only bad thing is that you will see all the context
menu items in the list when right clicking in the part number. You will
just have to train your users one which one they can pick (the other ones
should be locked with security)

I didn't do the context menu maintenance but I'll ask the guy that did and get back to you as whatever it is he did works.

My hunch would be that it was done in conjunction with the user type roles we have established (that also control access to general menus and applications).

Something to consider: I happen to have all 3 roles assigned to my userID that give me access to each version (depending upon what menu section I'm in)... I personally find it a pain in the neck as I more often than not can't do what I need to do to a part in the right context menu launched version that ends up loading.

In our case, there is only a handful of us in this situation - so the 'greater good' was served by deploying 3 customized versions. If you have a LOT of users that might fall into a situation like mine, the 'greater good' might NOT be served by deploying multiple customizations.

Case in point: Vendor Maintenance. We have a similar situation with this app in that we want to limit specific user roles to a specific set of editing capabilities. In this case, the 'best' solution was a single customization that utilizes the 'who am i' session load method to determine the userID, get the user's associated role(s) and then enable or disable specific controls based on the role(s).

Personally, although it ends up imbedding some of the security control within the customization (definitely not an ideal practice), the results are better as all users can SEE all fields in the app. In the long term, these users (compared to our Part Maintenance users) are more likely to be able to be cross trained and allow responsibilities to be shifted from one department to another (if it makes us more efficient to do so sometime in the future).

Our 3 customized Parts Maintenance apps completely hide fields from groups of users... This fosters very departmental 'silo' thinking - and makes it unlikely daily use will lead to self learning and insight that would make cross training or process responsibility shifting between departments easy to do in the future.

If you have some $$$ and time and patience...

....you could try the Epicor Portal. It does seem to be designed to allow
restricted users to update limited information. See the web cast:

https://epicweb.epicor.com/resources/webcasts/Pages/GC_WC_ContentPacks_08060
8.aspx

Mark W.
One way would be, if you are are using a version with the BPM, to
create a pre-process that could verify the userID and restric the
update.

We want to change parts from avg cost to std cost. If I zero out the qty and try to go int part maintenance and change it from avg to std in the cost field as soon as I tab out of the field it changes back to avg?? not sure what would cause that? is there something else that needs changed first to allow this??

It's working on a backup, that is strange. Would running a backup/restore fix any errors? Are you progress? Have you tried rebuilding indexes on the live database.

Also I've seen job records get into "state" where they don't update correctly. I've been able to clear some of these by toggling field values. Maybe the same thing can happen with parts? Can you try changing a few like nonstock, qty bearing, etc...

ok, let me look at that and see if there is a BPM someplace setting it. I haven't dealt with those yet. Have been focused on BAQ's, Dashboards and Crystal reports...
