Perspectives 2001

I think it is now called SHOP FLOOR USER. They've added job and part
tracker. If you have the advanced material module (which we are already
pretty sure to buy), shipping and receiving can be done out of shop floor
user screens. Also, you can change the log-on from that screen so that a
supervisor with greater rights can do some things (can you see I didn't
spend quite enough time fooling around with it?). Anyhow, both the new data
collection and the advanced material module look pretty slick to me.

If anyone has a few minutes, I have not attended Perspectives in the past
and am interested in your opinion to this conference. Is there any value to
spending $1100 just to register for it? I'm not sure that I can justify the
money unless there is great value. I would like to hear about your good
experiences and/or horror stories from this event.

This will be an interesting thread.

I just replied to our Epicor account rep for an inquiry as to who from his
area may be going. So alot of this is fresh on my mind. Here is a raw
list:
Good things:
1. Good education value if you have not gone before or in awhile
2. Compare to the cost of a couple classes
3. Great chance to meet real users (like here but better)
4. Chance to "try out" other modules and products - including partner
products
5. If your rep is there it can be particularly valuable
6. Great "events" at night and lots of food so you can economize that
expense
7. They finally color coded lunch tables and badges to make it easier to
spot Vantage people
Bad Things:
1. Expensive golf resort locations - hard to convince the boss - $189/nt
ouch!
2. Much lower airfare this year (example $220 RT from MN compared to over
$800 last year)
3. All session notes on CD - difficult to write on while in session ;)
4. Session notes CD arrive many weeks afterward anyway
5. Runs Sun-Wed - no time to recuperate before back to the office on Thur.
6. October is in the middle of hurricane season in FL

I'm sure I'll have other thoughts as this topic gets rolling. BTW - I'm
going.

We are new to Epicor. Can anyone share with me on line or off how
this seminar is and how beneficial it would be to a new user of
Vantage? Thanks.
First of all these sessions have changed over the past few years as we have
evolved with DCD, Dataworks, Epicor, etc...

You can attend general sessions to see the overall direction of Epicor and
all of it's products.
You can attend general sessions to see the direction of Vantage.
You can attend focused sessions on hardware, Operating Systems, Modules of
Vantage, Report Builder, VBFORMS, EBI, New Features, etc... They also
incorporate trade booths for vendors of related products. Last year Epicor
had a hall of solutions where you could sit down at a PC and look at the
latest release of Vantage. I thought this was neat because it was staffed by
programmers and developers, not sales people. If you are a new user, or old
user trying to implement a new module or just better utilize modules already
implemented. It's a good show to attend.

Actually, I'd been thinking about this already. I think it was well worth
the time and energy spent-traveling cross country alone was kind of a
challenge.

There were not a lot of Vantage users there, which meant that we had much
more time to check out 5.1 in the "Hall of Solutions", as well as spend a
great deal of time discussing the product with the development team and
others. Learned a few new tricks. The new release (5.1) looks pretty
good. Yes, I know it always looks good there, but I spent quite some time
making new orders, quotes and jobs, checking out the new data collection
screens, entering data, receiving and shipping parts and so on and I didn't
break it once. I really tried, guys. Looks like the new data collection is
actually going to save us an office user or two, so that in itself was worth
the trip.

The classes were all nice presentations, and even the ones about new
modules (advanced materials management and whatever the new EBI is) felt
like an informative session, not a huge sales pitch. I left wanting to
spend more time with the product, not wondering if things would bomb out on
us when we got home--and NOT trying to figure out how I was going to explain
THAT change to management.

No, they didn't print the book of slides, but the CD was in our bags when we
got them, and the slides were more informative, so I think the CD will be
worth having.

We heard about their new web-learning (e-learning) plans, so more education
opportunities will be available without heavy travel expenses-a big plus for
everyone.

I'm sure there will be gotchcha's in this new release, there always are-the
law of cybernetic entomology-there is always one more bug. But looks like
they banged the heck out of it before they set it free.

Overall, I would definitely attend again-as long as it's someplace with
lower humidity (cloudy for 5 days, humidity lowest at 85%, I'm too spoiled
for words).

Anyway, there's my quarter's worth.

I haven't even finished doing this for my boss yet but as long as I am
organizing my thoughts.... this is kind of long.

I have a few bones to pick about the organization of sessions and so forth
and will likely unload a few of these comments on the web site feedback form
but over all I would say Yes, it was worth it. Almost for as much as a
"unlearned" as what I learned. I had been under several mistaken
impressions about upgrading form 4.0 to 5.1 and the time I will save by not
floundering around will more than pay for the trip.

Random thoughts (not in any priority order)
1. Monday was the least useful day. Too much rah rah Epicor / sales pitch
form them and partner vendors. I understand they help pay for it and keep
registration down but it was marginally useful. Still I got to talk to
other Vantage users which is always the best part anyway.
2. Too much rain.
3. Somehow my registration for labs got lost. It was all spelled out on my
registration form with a special note indicating how important the labs were
to me. Fortunately they had room (barely - see #4) to squeeze in.
4. Labs were in a very very small room. I think there ought to be more room
for "non-PC driver" observers to sit and watch. Maybe a bigger room and an
area of chairs behind the tables.
5. The labs I did attend were hugely beneficial. More labs or "how-to"
sessions on new topics would be good.
6. There was a lot of info on molding products to fit MS .NET which I am
worried about. I don't buy into the ASP model at all. Actually not buying
into much of what MS wants to do lately.
7. Sessions on features in 5.0 and 5.1 were really good and very worthwhile.
8. Excellent session on migration strategy - I guess I know now why I need
to test conversion process as well as have users test drive 5.1 to find
procedure changes. Looks like a lot of changes in Shop Floor Data
Collection. I cam away viewing this as almost a reimplementation of the
system.
9. FRx might be a good fit for us as a replacement for the Vantage Financial
report writer. Looks much easier to use.
10. I am very interested in the new VBI replacement for EBI. Vantage
Business Intelligence based on CorVu looks extremely powerful, much faster
and does not require SQL Server. This thing is way cool. Like scheduled
executive reports delivered by email overnight.
11. New eTraining over the web (similar to webinars) looks like a good
alternative to on-site training. Especially for the "What's new in ..."
topics. You can have several people sit and watch the same info. A real
help for preparing a version migration.
12. The parties were great (my thanks to the sponsors). Not much business
justification as far as "worth it" but then again I'm a happy employee. :)
13. Missed Wed. afternoon sessions due to flight back and need to allow time
for security which ended up being a breeze.
14. Hotel and restaurants were really nice but far too expensive. I think
this was a major reason attendance was so low. They did not disclose
location for next year. I bet it involves golf (which I do but never for
$179). Vegas was good because gambling subsidized room rates.
15. Yes, attendance was about 1/2 or last year or the year before. Not too
many Vantage people there. We missed you who did not go.
15. Session notes still only on CD. I will suggest again an option to
receive printed copies even at an extra charge (Maybe $20?). Hard to write
notes on the CD.
16. Universal Studios event was pretty good. And it didn't rain! Only
three "rides" open but they were OK.
17. I shudder at the thought of the bar bill for all the nightly events.
18. Personally I would like to see more real user presentations (like "How
we did this..." or Technical "How to's") especially on the first day. Sort
of like this group but in person with slides.
19. I got some real good info on technical issues for Customer ePortal (web
server vs. off-site hosted).
20. Good presentation by Crystal on Crystal Enterprise and CR 8.5 (even if
not supported for Vantage). If I ever make an intranet this looks mighty
interesting.
21. The 'Weakest Link" thing was pretty hillarious.

Ok, enough. All in all it was worth what my company spent to send me.
Times of slow business are ideal for investing and preparing for the next
upswing.
