Printing Labels From Vantage

We use Seiko Smart Printers, 2.125 x 4 labels and a custom Progress program
and Excel (to display the labels). We use a value team 3080 WelchAllyn
scanner to read this labels.

This system is very inexpensive ($300 or less for the printer and under $200
for the barcode readers). One issue: These printers have a maximum
resolution of 200 DPI, which is why we have to use 4" long labels for
PartNum, LotNum and Remnant Size. Remnant Size helps us keep track of pieces
without using Vantage's DimCode feature.

Sometime in the future, I'll be looking at high-resolution label printers to
get the size down (for our smaller parts) and the amount of information up
(for material going to jobs).

Good Luck! Barcodes save a lot of time but require careful planning to get
them to work.

Does anybody currently print despatch or stock labels directly from
Vantage. We're currently implementing these parts of Vantage and are
wondering what hardware and media people are currently using.

Many thanks and a happy new year to you all.

We use Zebra Printers and a custom progress program to print labels from the
part master VB forms. We are on 5.0 and will be going to 5.2.

Martin,

I implemented a labeling system (Zebra) for incoming purchased parts
recently. The reason I started it was to save some money on our restocking
fees.
We used to jot down job and position numbers with a Sharpie pen right on the
boxes. We purchase many parts from Allen Bradley / Rockwell on a daily
basis, and they are the type of vendor that charges you 40% on a return if
the box is damaged (even if the writing is on the underside of the box).
I did some research and found a vinyl label that can peel off easily,
without damaging cardboard, or leaving a trace, yet stays on with normal use
(including sliding it over a concrete floor). The label I am using is
1"x1.5"; fairly small, but the only info I am printing on it is part#, job#
and assy#. The vinyl label is about five times the cost of a regular paper
label, but 40% savings on an average return with A/B Rockwell more than
justifies the costs.

I found the Zebra labeler on E-bay ($75 vs. a $1250 reman special from
Brady), and I rewrote the PartTags.rpt myself. Previously the receiving
person was handwriting labels with the same info and wiretagging those to
parts. Needless to say we have saved quite some $$$ over the first months
alone.

HTH
