I'm considering taking some Progress training and I'm looking for
input from anybody who's taken these courses, or anybody who does
Progress programming. I see three possible places to start my
training. 1. Database Administration. 2. Text Programming 3. GUI
Programming.
Which of these would be most valuable to take? What is the most
useful form of programming for use with Vantage, Text or GUI? What
tools are needed to program with? Any insights on the merits/dangers
of getting involved with Progress programming would be welcomed.
Thanks,

Brian,
All would be good. I would start with the Database administration first.
You will get the most benefit from this. If you take another class, take
the Text Programming. A lot of what you learn in this class will help you
with report builder and the GUI class if you take it. Lastly, take the GUI
class. This class is not going to do you any good unless you plan on
programming in Progress.
As far as programming with Vantage, it is all done in GUI except for reports
and triggers. I don't think there is any real dangers getting involved with
Progress programming. As long as you create a separate database(s) from
Vantage and NEVER write anything to the Vantage database, you shouldn't have
any real problem at all. I am not a believer in modifying the standard code
because of the upgrade nightmares it creates.

Major Industries is in Wausau, Wisconsin. All of our training with Progress
has been "on the job". Epicor provides good instructions for tuning the
database, performing online backups and setting up ODBC. We don't use
Progress for anything but Vantage, so those items handle 90% of my concerns.
I've been working with Progress for 5 years - it is just a database. If you
have any DB experience, Progress won't phase you for anything day-to-day.
Also, Progress (the company) has an excellent website and knowledge-base.
I've spent quite a bit of time there and find it very useful. If you
venture outside of "standard" Vantage use, the website usually covers the
topic.
Our background:
Vantage 6.0 moving to 6.1 next week (in the process of testing with all
users)
Currently on W2K server, 6.1 is running on a Linux server
We also perform ODBC calls from other web servers on IIS (Microsoft) and
Apache (Linux)
If you have any questions, feel free to call or write.
