Purchase Contracts

Great minds think a like Rob...! ;o)

We will probably be ok with just one vendor per part I think Rob. We
tend to place longer term PO's on individual vendors, that we then
want to pull in as and when required rather than have MRP push it all
the time. I guess that the ideal with the vendor is that the next
rolling 2-weeks requirements are firm, and after that it can float
around in response to changes in demand. I am hoping that PO
contracts will assist here.

We have found that trying to manage PO suggestions is almost
impossible, and far from helping us, running a generic MRP system is
actually taking the business backwards. This is not a good thing!

I will be very interested to hear how you get on... If it looks good
we will probably go ahead and buy it...

Cheers,

Nick

The results are that you don't have multi-release POs (often
scheduled out pre-emptively months ahead of demand) that don't result
in stupid 'cancel' MRP messages (thousands of them daily) that Buyers
have to weed through.

I am looking for some assistance in running Purchase Contracts.

I have Vantage 8.03.305F (Progress DB). I am testing Purchase Contracts for
the first time and cannot get any Purchase Schedules to generate. I can get
as far as seeing my PO for a purchase contract to show up on the Part
Schedule for the part on the PO. I run Generate Suggestions first with an
end date and selecting Reiterative so I can select 'Include Purchase
Contracts'. I then run Generate Purchase Schedules with no cutoff date.
The log does not indicate any errors. When I go to Purchase Schedule
Approval there is nothing there.

Any insight into what steps I am missing would be greatly appreciated

Have you entered any demand for this product? Is the generate
suggestions box checked? Is there a lot multiple set up?

Thank you, Jim. Demand for the product was what I was missing. I knew it
had to be something obvious!

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if you are using the purchase contracts module
within Vantage...?

I believe this brings better management of purchase suggestions, and
delivery schedules can be placed on vendors and managed more
effectively.

We are currently struggling with the management of purchase
suggestions and want to manage vendors via schedules rather than
individal releases on PO lines. The PO's contain too much detail and
we are forever changing them in response to changing customer demand.
This is not really an MRP rules issue, but is caused because customer
demand can be quite volatile. One might argue that MRP is simply not
the right approach for our business as we want to pull and not push!

Does anyone have any experience of the purchase contracts module...?

Thanks,

Nick
Hey there Nick,

Amazing how parallel our paths are (re: trying to live with Vantage).

Next week, we are doing a multi-day effort to get PO contracts up and running as we share your same problem.

I've already done some modeling (months ago) and found, as long as you don't exceed 2 vendors per part, the process works pretty well. The results are that you don't have multi-release POs (often scheduled out pre-emptively months ahead of demand) that don't result in stupid 'cancel' MRP messages (thousands of them daily) that Buyers have to weed through.

Set up & management is not intuitive AT ALL however. This is my biggest concern as the 3 levels of management process (The COntract POs themselves, the Supplier contract schedule parameters, the Part Contract schedule parameters) is such an alien process to probably 99% of the Buyer talent in the world.

As usual, v8's design paradigm is grossly overcomplicated and could have been achieved (re RESULTS) using a much more direct, intuitive paradigm.

Once set up, the process works very well. MANAGING the process on an ongoing basis is my concern (hence the multi-day review effort next week - likely bleeding into the following week also).

For all the clear benefits (to us) of using contract POs, I have to be sure I'm not pushing a process on purchasing that will spin out of control (silently) and become a train wreck a few months down the road.

I'll keep you posted (directly)... Appreciate if you do the same.

Take care

Rob
