-----RE: Upgrade to Epicor 9 or Epicor 10

Good Day Jay:

In the movie “Field of Dreams” the young kid is brushed back twice by two inside-high fast balls aimed at his head.

He asks for advise; and the coach says “ He does not want to walk you, so it should be in the strike zone ……… but watch out for ‘in your ear’”.

So answer is: Go with E10 ………….. but watch out for the potential pain.

E10 is far enough along to be the way to go, since a double conversion has a myriad of potential problems.

You need to do a real study for this because so many factors will affect the pick.

Size of company, complexity of data, complexity of locations and business model, need to get of V8, Money, training, etc.

What does Epicor, and at least one other consultant, recommend.

Identify about 6 CORE things you do, and see how those processes work in each system – MUST avoid gotcha’s. Run through the Complete cycle and do not accept “ well that’s just the test database being funny”. Unfortunately, overall system speed is impossible to test beforehand, so research it through references.

Things to consider:

Do you want to change a lot of Business processes, in E9 which will require customization and configuring. Then change it all for E10?

If changing procedures, you need at least six months for training and development.

New E10 features may make better procedures possible. If designed using E9 technology you may be prevented from using the new features when going to E10

You will have to go to E10 at some point, either forced to by Epicor, or by needing E10 features.

Have the third Party software caught up? Or, is it far batter since true SQL based???

Speed, Speed, Speed, -- E9 and Crystal reports Achilles heel. E10 may be the Holy Grail.

E10 is new, but will is being used, so by the time you go live it should be OK

Since new, consultants will not be familiar with new features.

SQL is the core db, but the users only see the “Face” of the system only so will not be affected.

You, the developer will be greatly affected

Jump to E9 is big then to E10 is not minor. Why go through two learning curves.

We were in a similar boat V8 vs. E9 – we went with E9 and it was definitely a good decision.

Starting with E10 will assure that all is optimized for it, versus set up for E9 and then ‘convert’ to E10- lots of ‘options’ might be off the table concerning the CORE layout of you system.

Hardware for E10 needs to be SQL optimized. So why start with “E9” optimized hardware.

E10 will be very well supported by Epicor since it s new and fresh in people’s minds.

How does the money change? Does a second conversion double the cost?

Totally different Back-Up options for SQL???

            Handheld ability?

Thin client, remote access, Web-app, I-pad compatible, etc.

E10 may have far superior ability to LINK to E10 date with ACCESS or Excel.

            Etc., etc.

Subject: [Vantage] Upgrade to Epicor 9 or Epicor 10

The company that I work for is just getting ready to start the upgrade process (from 8.03.409C on a Progress database). We haven't officially started yet, but we will be very soon (we have our kick-off call with the consulting firm scheduled for tomorrow, with our preliminary plan being that we would be live by Q4, 2014).

The plan has been that we are upgrading to Epicor 9, however, the consultants are now inquiring whether we would be interested in Epicor 10. No one at our company attended Insights this year, but from what we have been told, there are some major advantages to E10.

What are the thoughts of the group? If you were in our situation, would you rather...

Upgrade to Epicor 9 now (staying on a Progress DB), knowing that you will likely be upgrading again in 5 years or so?

OR....

Upgrade to Epicor 10 now, converting to SQL database (which no one at our company is familiar with), and possibly delay the next upgrade for 8-10 years?

Thanks for the opinions,

Jay
