Sales kits Blank Title 74916

I am at 6.1 and do not have the kit function. In lieu of that we create
kits via a job to a sales order. (I assume that's what you meant when you
referred to "make direct".) In our case the job only serves as a vehicle to
assemble a kit of stocked items from inventory and ship them to a customer
as a one line item/one price sale. That works pretty well except for a
couple of issues.

If only one part of the kit is returned via RMA, the cost of the return has
to be adjusted since the default would be the cost of the whole kit.

The other problem we have is when any part(s) of the kit is serial number
controlled. The traceability of serial number is compromised somewhat. The
individual items serial number status does not show "shipped"- it remains as
WIP on the job used to assemble the kit.

When we have a serial number controlled component sold as part of a kit and
it is returned via RMA, the real fun begins! I have not been able to
upgrade to 8.0 or later, but was hoping the kit function will alleviate
these conditions for us.

Hi Group,
Would be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts or opinions
regarding the use of "sales kits" versus "make direct" manufactured
assemblies to fill sales orders. We are both new to Vantage and
struggling to create adequate safety stock levels for new product
lines that were instantly in demand by our customers.

Thanks,

Dave, There is no direct relationship between "make direct" and sales kits. A "make direct" sales order will create a job (an unfirmed job if you don't create it yourself) to build an assembly. This will be incremental to whatever you may have in stock. So, if you are planning to build things in advance of customer orders, you wouldn't want to use "make direct".
Â
A sales kit on the other hand grays out the "make direct" flag and assumes you are pulling the componentry from stock. You would have to have your planners determine the optimal number of various widgets that you would have on hand to satisfy a customer requirement and then create a sales order for the kit. The good thing about the kit is that it doesn't require a fixed bill of material. You can create one for the kit that represents your most common configuration but during sales order creation, you can add to it or delete items from it by zeroing out the quantity of those components not required.
Â
If you set up a min-max of your components, Vantage will create unfirmed requirements when you violate the levels and that will be the clue to build more of each to get your onhand back in line with the planning parameters.
Â
I'm sure others will chime in if I have misspoken on any of the above.
Â

We thought about using kits. Most of our products consist of a mirror, a chassis, and various accessories. However, each of the product's components often ship at separate times. With a kit, the entire kit has to be shipped together. That made it unworkable for us to use kits.

We are using sales kits. Since we do not have MRP it allows the
visibility we need since we ship the same items indivually. One thing
I should mention though. When processing RMAs/credits for sets, the
system goes to the component level as well. This means that it takes
the selling price of the components in the credit so if the
individual prices sum to more than the selling price of the set, the
credit ends up as more than the original invoice. I have submitted an
enhancement request for this months ago (maybe even a year) since
they told me this was "as designed", but I haven't heard anything
more about it. We have to manually create the credit and edit the
prices so we don't give money away.
