Securing Shop Floor Stations With Windows 2000 Pro

I am by no means implying that registry hacks are absolutely required or are
the best means of implementing security. They are sometimes the only option
for certain security settings, though. There are some nice fairly intuitive
tools bundled with 2000 for the task of securing a machine, POLICY EDITOR,
being one of them. you just have to know how to use them and how they work.

having said all that, we generally don't put alot of time into securing our
workstations. The sensitive data is where it belongs, in a locked rack on
the server.

However, in situations where supervision is limited and employee work ethic
is a concern, windows nt and 2000 can provide an adequately secure
environment.

95/98 are wide open, until you purchase third party utilities.

I haven't seen crowd control, but I know it is possible to secure a windows
2000 PC very, very tight.

you just need to determine what do you want them to have access to, what do
you not want them to have access to, and exactly how bulletproof the
security needs to be, and set permissions accordingly. If you are concerned
with a hacker with a screwdriver, then put the PC in a locked case. If you
are just merely trying to limit options available to users so only job
critical applications are running and system settings aren't being messed
up, then security can be slightly less stringent.

It would probably be worth it to pick up a good book on the 2000 security,
or better yet attend a class.
With the right registry hacks, you can hide certain icons on the desktop,
prevent display setting modifications, etc.

Is anyone securing a shop floor PC with Windows 2000 Pro?
Are you capable of securing it like Crowd Control does for Win95?
