Thanks Steve. I think you just filled in the last of my W2K gaps. I
suspect I will install the new server and move the Exchange database(s) to
Exch-2000 and then remove the old email server making the new one a DC, as
you have. Probably at around US Thanksgiving holiday. Then when I upgrade
to 5.1 at Christmas I will look into upgrading that server to W2K at the
same time (if the 4.0 - 5.0 - 5.1 migration is smooth). This way I could
activate AD and preapre to slowly move all our Win98 PCs to W2K. I will go
very slowly.

Sorry to be so late to respond to the topic; I was out of the office
yesterday.
First of all, the BDC is actually designed to handle login authentication
rather than the PDC. Microsoft designed the software so that BDCs could be
placed all over a large company, even geographically dispersed, and this
would reduce network traffic. It doesn't really affect those of us with
small networks. The purpose of the PDC is to be the central authority that
all BDCs have to synch with.

I have been running a mixed-mode network for over a year with no problems.
I have 2 W2K Domain Controllers (DC) and my Vantage server is still a BDC on
NT4. Originally, I just converted my PDC to Active Directory (AD) since I
had rolled-out about thirty new W2K Pro workstations and I wanted some of
the cool features that AD Group Policies provides. But then a Microsoft tech
pointed out that my DC had no place to back-up the AD database. The real
problem here is that once a W2KPro system finds a W2K DC it will no longer
log on through an NT4 BDC and I'd be stuck without a back-up. Just
something to think about.
Also, Progress does not support version 9.0 on W2K servers. It does support
version 9.1 on W2K servers, so Vantage version 5 and above should work on
your new server with no problem.
As for Vantage support telling you not to make your Vantage server a PDC,
that's like saying don't plug that radio into the same outlet group as your
television because it might reduce the amount of electricity that your
television gets!! Trust me; there's more than plenty of power to handle the
load. If you have more than 5000 users logging into your network at the
same time THEN it might be a little bit of an issue. Otherwise don't sweat
it. Remember that Microsoft designed this for LARGE networks of 10,000
workstations. I don't think our networks are going to be a problem.

My BDC is alot faster, I just thought it was beating the PDC to the work.

The servers are about the same, although the PDC is dual-processor.
If I remember right, from WinNT Server training, the BDC will
authenticate whenever the PDC is busy. If there's a way to tell the
BDC to not authenticate I'm not aware of it. Any ideas?
