[semi-OT] Win2000 & Exchange 2000

Thanks Steve. I think you just filled in the last of my W2K gaps. I
suspect I will install the new server and move the Exchange database(s) to
Exch-2000 and then remove the old email server making the new one a DC, as
you have. Probably at around US Thanksgiving holiday. Then when I upgrade
to 5.1 at Christmas I will look into upgrading that server to W2K at the
same time (if the 4.0 - 5.0 - 5.1 migration is smooth). This way I could
activate AD and preapre to slowly move all our Win98 PCs to W2K. I will go
very slowly.

Sorry to be so late to respond to the topic; I was out of the office
yesterday.

First of all, the BDC is actually designed to handle login authentication
rather than the PDC. Microsoft designed the software so that BDCs could be
placed all over a large company, even geographically dispersed, and this
would reduce network traffic. It doesn't really affect those of us with
small networks. The purpose of the PDC is to be the central authority that
all BDCs have to synch with.

Todd C. -
I have been running a mixed-mode network for over a year with no problems.
I have 2 W2K Domain Controllers (DC) and my Vantage server is still a BDC on
NT4. Originally, I just converted my PDC to Active Directory (AD) since I
had rolled-out about thirty new W2K Pro workstations and I wanted some of
the cool features that AD Group Policies provides. But then a Microsoft tech
pointed out that my DC had no place to back-up the AD database. The real
problem here is that once a W2KPro system finds a W2K DC it will no longer
log on through an NT4 BDC and I'd be stuck without a back-up. Just
something to think about.

Also, Progress does not support version 9.0 on W2K servers. It does support
version 9.1 on W2K servers, so Vantage version 5 and above should work on
your new server with no problem.

As for Vantage support telling you not to make your Vantage server a PDC,
that's like saying don't plug that radio into the same outlet group as your
television because it might reduce the amount of electricity that your
television gets!! Trust me; there's more than plenty of power to handle the
load. If you have more than 5000 users logging into your network at the
same time THEN it might be a little bit of an issue. Otherwise don't sweat
it. Remember that Microsoft designed this for LARGE networks of 10,000
workstations. I don't think our networks are going to be a problem.

My BDC is alot faster, I just thought it was beating the PDC to the work.

If I remember right, from WinNT Server training, the BDC will

OK, NT/Win2000 experts, and especially for those who have converted, I need
some opinions/advice:

I am running NT-SBS 4.5 (w/Exchange 5.5) as our PDC. Other server (BDC) is
NT 4.0 running Vantage. I have just received a new server and am upgrading
to Windows 2000 Server and Exchange 2000. I am still educating myself on
Active Directory issues but have some questions:
1. Any "gottchas" in the new Win2K server running (or not) Active Directory
and being the new PDC?
2. Ditto for mixed-mode issues?
3. Should I be switching Vantage server to Win2K at same time? Is this OK
for 4.00.12 and Progress 9.0B?
4. Any conversion issues from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 I should know
about in advance?
5. Can I bring new server up as a BDC (to get user info) and promote it to
PDC when I remove old server?

I will be hring a consultant to assist but knowing some of this before will
greatly smooth the process. If you can help me avoid blindly walking off a
cliff I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
-Todd Caughey

First of all you cannot use Active Directory in an environment that combines
NT4 DC's and W2K "DC's". In other words you will need to have all of your
servers at WIN2K to use Active Directory. Therefore if you want to use
Active Directory you will have to upgrade your Vantage Server at the same
time as you point out that it is a BDC server.

As for the move from NT4 to W2K. You should upgrade your PDC first. MS
recommends Synchronizing your entire domain, then removing your BDC or one
of your BDC's from the network. I mean like stick it in a closet. Upgrade
your PDC to WIN2K. When all is well and users are able to log onto the
network successfully you can begin to upgrade your BDC's. Go to the link
below for a document that discusses the process in detail.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/default.asp?url=/windows
2000/en/server/help/upgrading_a_domain.htm

It is not something you want to undertake without significant planning. You
may also want to do a little research on SBS 4.5, it seems to me that I have
read that there is not an upgrade path for it to WIN2K. That would mean you
are installing WIN2K from scratch, not a bad idea but it will certainly be a
more complicated and more time consuming path to follow.

Thanks Todd. You are correct, there is no direct path from SBS to W2K. I
had an old NT license not being used which I will use on the new server to
"qualify" the upgrade to W2K. So the new server will be a virgin W2K/Exch2K
system and will take over as the primary domain server. The old server is
getting retired as a desktop PC. If there is enough advantage, especially
in making the process smoother, to upgrading the Vantage server to W2K (and
using AD) I may justify that in consultant savings. I just got back from
Barnes & Noble where I bought $130 of W2K and Exch2K books. Guess I won't
have trouble sleeping for the next month or so.

If I remember, Vantage Tech support recommended not running the
Vantage server as a BDC. They told me that it would run faster as a
member server. I already had mine installed as a BDC when they told
me this and I never took the time to change it. You might check with
them to see what they recommend. I have noticed that my BDC does
about 95% of the login and security authentication.

Does the BDC do 95% of the login work because it is supose to or is your BDC
a lot faster server than the PDC.

My BDC is alot faster, I just thought it was beating the PDC to the work.

The servers are about the same, although the PDC is dual-processor.
If I remember right, from WinNT Server training, the BDC will
authenticate whenever the PDC is busy. If there's a way to tell the
BDC to not authenticate I'm not aware of it. Any ideas?
