[Semi-OT] Win98 to Win2K Workstation Upgrade

I've done 30 or 40 upgrades from various windows versions to w2k and XP.
Typically, the problems encountered are old software incompatable with the
new OS. One of the things I'd suggest, clean and compact your registry,
your system will be happier. There are several low cost tools, and
sharewares to do this. Clean out all temp files, export your internet
cookies and favorites some place safe. Uninstall as much "junk" as you can.
Also in going to w2k or XP. You can't move the harddrive to another
computer after going to these OS's unless the motherboard is IDENTICAL to
the old motherboard. If you build a new box and plan on moving your w2k
drive or XP drive to the new box forget it. The OS will fry. Even if you
try to put it back into the old MB its OS is completely totally cooked.

I need some early Monday morning advice. For reasons of software
compatibility I must upgrade my own PC to Win2K. It is required for
MS-Producer, an add-in for PowerPoint. If it was anyone elses around here I
would scrub the drive and do a fresh install. But I have so much "odd"
software (evaluations, special purpose, programming, etc...) I am hestitant
to have to re-install it all.

I have heard a lot of horror stories about doing the upgrade, versus fresh
install. Anyone have any good experience with upgrading? Any tips to make
it more stable? Worst case it goes wacky and I end up doing a scrub/install
anyway but at the cost of an extra day of time lost on other projects. Any
advice would be much appreciated. Especially as relates to Vantage and
Report Builder.

Thanks,

I would upgrade to Windows XP instead of W2K. From what I've seen the
upgrade for XP works better than the one for W2K. Also, XP is a better OS.
If you go to XP, you also have another option. You can do a fresh install
to another hard drive and use the migration assistant to pull all of your
programs and settings over to XP. It is supposed to work okay, but I don't
know anyone (personally) that's ever tried it.

I did a similar upgrade 2 years ago. I ended up installing Win2K as a
separate OS on the same system. I did it with a second drive, but have done
it on the same drive before. It worked slick for me, and gave me about a
year and change to "revert back" to the old OS to run legacy application and
then continue on with the new one.
Gave up and removed 98 when I had not booted into it for 6 months.
It's a thought anyway.

Todd,

I upgraded roughly 15 users from W98 to W2K rather than fresh installs. I
had too many to do in a short time to do them all fresh. 2 or 3 out of the
15 had to be done over from scratch because of issues with (I think - it's
been awhile) MS Office Small Business and McAfee (separate issues). It
depends on how patient you are, but given my time constraints, I would do it
again the same way. Have had very few problems overall, except for MS
products that won't work with their own OS.

If you're running MS Office Small Business, you need to get rid of that
anyway, because it's pretty much un-uninstallable and un-upgradable, from my
own experience. McAfee (and not even all their tech support people know
this) needs to be completely uninstalled from the PC before doing the
upgrade, or you'll have BIG registry issue problems trying to get it work or
reinstall it.

TruTime program for the timeclocks worked fine on W98, but did not install
on W2K. Permissions problem. I ended up having to give the user admin
rights to their entire c-drive and entire registry - per TruTime tech
support. I guess their code was hybrid 16-bit/32-bit junk. If you're using
common current software... no problems generally. But that special software
might be tricky.

Like you said, it can't hurt to try. (Get a good backup of everything.)
Good luck.
