Need Advise on Operating System Changes

Win2K server, WIN NT Workstations, XP, 98, just got rid of the last Win95.
Konica 7030s, HP4500n, HP5L, Lexmark 2390 & 91's, etc.
It all works for me....Have Win2003 Enterprise edition will put that up with
no hesitation (LOL) at the end of it's "beta" period (probably 2005 ((since
it's 2003 and I put in Win2000)said with sarcastic humor)).

Hello All,

Ref. Vantage 5.2

I am presently running Vantage workstations on Windows 98 SE. I know
that Epicor will stop supporting these very shortly, if they have not
already. Therefore I need to upgrade operating systems across my
user base, not only for Vantage; we would also like to keep up with
current technology.

I realize that I have a choice between XP and 2000 Professional. I
would like to ask the group which operating system they would
suggest, and should I do upgrades or start from scratch.

I plan on leaving data collection workstations alone for the time
being.

Thanks for your help,

Mike Gilchrist

You can upgrade a workstation up to 2000, but XP needs a fresh install. We are on 2000pro now but are moving to XPpro as I replace or get new workstations. XP with all it's faults (like the rest of windows) has the best memory managment for other programs we run. My workstation has had XPpro on it since it came out as a bata. Vantage has worked from ver. 4-6 on it. With 2000pro or XPpro I get very few "blue screens of death" calls now.

We are going to all XP Pro soon. We purchased an XP upgrade CD and were
able to upgrade a PC from Win98. We first had to update all the Win98
patches to convince XP that it was really Win98 SE. Then it went fine.
About 30 minutes. The install seems to work cleanly, and the machine has
decent performance for a PIII 450 with 128MB of RAM (tested using a rather
large Excel spreadsheet). Performance was actually better than with Win98
installed (on the spreadsheet test). Having 256MB of RAM caused the Hard
Drive less action on the big spreadsheet, but wasn't noticably faster.

I believe most IT pros recommend a fresh install with any OS upgrade.

I am holding my breath for Vantage to be supported on Linux clients.

I will not install or use XP here. We are gradually upgrading Win98 to Win2K. We buy XP (pay an upgrade price of about $179) but scrub PC and install Win2K clean (EULA allows to back-install OS). Tried the upgrade to Win2K, never again. So we are "legal" for XP should we decide to to there but standardizing on Win2K. Win2K is enough of a memory management improvement (really pretty stable) and has none of the auto-update and license management BS of XP. Frankly I really doubt we will ever switch the shop floor PCs from Win98 as long as they keep working. We just got rid of our last Win 3.1 and Win-95 machines.

We are having invoice printing and check printing problems with XP Pro. There were others in this group that were having printing
issues with different forms. If the client is not used for extensive printing from Vantage then XP Pro will do otherwise W2K Pro.

I just had to make the same decision and based on what I have heard 2000 is
the way to go. My company decided on 2000. What is your server operation
system? From what I have heard XP does not work well in a mixed server
environment. For example a NT and a Win2000, but it works ok in a all
WIN2000 or 2003 environment. I don't know....we went with what we thought
was safest.

For the workstations I ended up reformatting each one because our mixed
environment is Novell and NT4.0. This weekend is my big switch over to new
servers. Wish me luck!

First of all,

I ALWAYS recommend a Fresh New install, no matter what the operating system.
Its always best to start from scratch for multiple reasons: speed,
compatibility, stability, and just all out less "weird" problems (antivirus
always seems to have problems with upgrades).

In addition, Windows 2000 and Windows XP are pretty much the same (The real
names are: Windows NT 5.0, and Windows NT 5.1 if you care at all)

Windows XP is just like 2000 but with a prettier interface. The big
difference that I have always noticed, is the speed, A LOT faster, and much
better memory management on XP. Great for use with graphic applications such
as Engineering (excluding Apple systems), plus XP handles anti-aliasing and
transparency much better which help.

But between the two, Windows XP can be made to look just like 2000, you also
have the same management utilities for the most part and functionality. Like
I said, its just prettier. Both support .NET very well so there is no
problems on that end either.

I personally recommend Windows XP Professional for two reasons: speed, and
if you ever want to use Windows 2000, you technically can (according to the
big M's licensing agreements - backwards licensing). An of course obviously
you should know the differences between XP Pro and XP Home.

My experience is that Vantage works fine on either XP Pro or W2000 Pro, but
I really had problems with the XP Pro workstation getting along with my
W2000 Server. The XP Pro workstation took a really long time to connect to
the W2000 server - almost like 2 kids fighting as to who was in charge, and
XP finally gave in and cooperated (reluctantly). Since I only had 1 XP
workstation, I didn't spend a lot of time trying to fine tune it once I got
it working. I finally erased XP and installed W2000 on it and it's now much
easier to manage. Also, do a fresh install, don't upgrade.

I'm not signed up to "rent" the software (software assurance is it?) on the corporate version so end up with "retail" version that is a nightmare everytime the hardware changes. I won't put up with that. Maybe I could buy one corporate SA copy without the licensing/hardware verification and install from that. But it seems to be too much hassle. As long as Win2K does the job I'll forgo assiting MS with smoothing their revenue stream. If I can hold out for two more years we break even on buying "new" whatever version is around then.

For my 2 Cents, everything is either XP pro or W2k Server. (well one nt
PDC that is due for retirement). We have had no significant issues with
this setup. We rebuilt equipment and went with OEM software. I plan
them to be 3-4 year machines. I cycle machines through the shop from
the Office. Counting on the harsher environment to "kill off" the old
systems. The truth is if you hold back on cycling your technology you
windup rebuilding your whole infra structure in one crack. Maintaining
a constant "Purge" cycle keeps your system, your users, and your sanity
intact.

Mike,

Mark me down for not running over to the XP booth at the Windows Fair just
yet. The 2 operating systems react differently to system events. I find XP
hangs a lot. Maybe it's the way I have it configured (defaults), but W2K
doesn't hang there thinking like XP. And W2K seems crisper all around than
XP. XP's interface seems written for people with not much PC savvy. That
makes it hard for people who know what they're doing (or close to it
anyway). Modem access to the internet is again sluggish on XP compared to
W2K. Our network is totally W2K. And I have almost no bluescreens (unless
the hardware resources are too old and unstable) and no support calls from
users for lockups. Antivirus (McAfee) had a very hard time installing on
XP. Media Player is very slow to react on XP (maybe it's the newer version
of media player causing that). Overall the W2K network has been great for
me. It meets all of our needs, is stable, and is easy to dance to - I give
it a 93.

On upgrading workstations - sure why not... here we go against the grain
again. Note: Do not attempt this without the help of a qualified
consultant who is not doing this for the first time. First, yes - fresh
installs are definitely better - unless other considerations take priority.
I (and the consultant) had to upgrade 40 workstations and 2 servers from W98
to W2K in one weekend (among other things). No way I could have reinstalled
all new OS's from scratch. I had been trying to do that as I went along,
and it finally made more sense (immediate hardware and software needs, as
well as time constraints) to standardize the kludge all at once. Of course
there was some mopping up to do after. And other than needing to uninstall
the anti-virus software beforehand, and a few permissions issues with
Vantage and other files afterward, the network has been stable and more than
satisfactory for the last year. Afterward, you will have to get used to the
different places W98, NT4 & W2K put things, because the upgrade leaves
system files where they were on the first install - email, my documents,
user account folders, windows folder, etc.

It depends on what you want and what you've got to work with.

Change of a dollar,

Hah! Funny, I installed W2K for my son last weekend and he asked - why not XP? I told him, remember MS-Bob? XP is like Bob for W2K. He almost got sick thinking about it. ;)

Personally, I think the MS Programming resources should have been allotted
