Setting up a test server

It will. Start the VM with networking disabled the first time. You'll need
to do this anyway so you can adjust the IP and such. You can leave the
original server running.

Strangely, users got this message this morning. I've never seen it
before: No Servers Available.

Restarting the Appservers fixed the problem, but I'm curious if anyone
has seen this before. It's not a licensing issue. I couldn't even
login from the Vantage server using my manager account. In fact, you
wouldn't even get the Vantage login screen.

Epicor wasn't very informative so I'm asking you all. I'm on 8.03.404b
SQL.

Thank you in advance.

It's not really anything to worry too much about. And it should
disappear by itself after a while.

If it happens regularly, you just need to increase the number of
servers (appservers) you have configured in Progress Explorer.

Download the Performance Tuning Guide from the Epicor website
(https://epicweb.epicor.com/doc/Docs/
PerformanceTuningGuideProgress_803407.pdf) for info on how to do this.

It sounds like you had no connections available. So your appservers may have
all been busy. I would check their status in the PET if you get this again.

but it can be a fairly vague error in the first place so it can be tough to
actually determine what the problem was, it is possible that you may have
had a record lock that wasn't getting released, which caused a cascading
lock of all your appservers until you were up to your maximum.

I know many here already do, but I would reccomend setting all of your
appservers up for verbose logging, AND make sure you also set them up to use
a maximum number of log files(I personally say 5-10) and then also set them
to be a maximum size so you don't need to worry about them taking up too
much disk space, I've always put them at 6000000. It shouldn't add too much
overhead to your machine and it shouldn't affect your performance.

The one major benefit to this is that when you restart your appservers, you
won't lose the logs because the first log is cleared and replaced when an
appserver is restarted, but since you would be using a perpetually
increasing number, your most recent activity in the logs won't be lost on
the restart.

I saw this same message for the first time yesterday.

It came up on my screen twice during the day. Also yesterday users
started complaining about Vantage running very slowly. We had added
several MES clients yesterday morning and when we checked the server
later in the day we found that the server was using 100 percent of
its resources.

Yesterday we assumed that the message was related to there now being
more users on our system than the server can handle and that we need
to upgrade our server.

We also restarted our app servers last night and things are running
OK so far today.

Ned, this is useful information. I've always been annoyed at the fact
that Progress restarts my logs, which means that when something goes bad
and I have to restart (or just start) the appservers I wind up losing
the information on what went wrong in the first place!

I'm assuming the unit for the log file size is in bytes? The docs
don't actually say. J I set mine to 104857600 bytes and three files.
That seems like plenty of history.

I think you may want to trim down that size some, 6000000 will give you a
6MB log file, your's looks like it will give you a 104MB log file. That's a
pretty big file to have to scroll through or open up even.

More of them that are smaller would be better. With a 104MB log, you may
never get to the second file before you have a problem.

And I forgot to mention in the last post, I am talking about the Appserver
Agent log, not the Appserver Broker logs, broker logs are mostly useless in
my opinion.

This used to happen to us when the Database backup ran at noon each day.
We stopped the noon backups, and haven't had that issue since. There
was one other time when our SQL server connected to our progress
database via a linked server, and it caused that same message. We
had many queries running at the same time that took up all the
appservers.

Unfortunately - we are all too familiar with this message. Nigel is
correct in pointing out that you may be bumping up against a max setting
for app servers. We have also found that it also can come into play if
for some reason there is latency in the connection between the client PC
and the application server.

One thing we have learned from this: Tech support from Epicor hold
widely varying views on what the "correct" settings are. Every time a
different tech connects to our system, they change the settings set by
the last person. I've seen and heard so many differing opinions on this
that I've given up asking for help from Epicor.

Below is a call our IT guy just posted to EPICweb. Actually, I think we all of a sudden started to have stability issues about a month prior to migrating to 9.04.507a. Can anyone lend any insight?

Summary:
TE No Servers Available

Epicor support,

Morton Manufacturing has had increasing Epicor and/or Progress stability issues since upgrading from 9.04.506c to 9.04.507a on 22 Apr 2011. While other errors are gone we are experiencing system down problems that we did not have before. For no apparent reason Epicor stops working. The work stations trying to use Epicor suddenly receive a message that indicates "No Servers are Available".

When we look at the status of the applications and the data using the Progress Explore Tool. They all show a status of active. We tried to stop the applications and database then restart the database. We were unable to restart the database.

When this happens the Epicor administration console that is installed on the Epicor Server will not load (it just thinks and never finishes)

As a result we have no choice but to reboot the server.

This has happened at least 6 times since the upgrade on 22 Apr 11 and has been more frequent with the latest outage happening just 12 hours after restarting the server (we rebooted at 2:00pm yesterday and it went down around 2:00am this morning. We are a 24 hour, 7 days a week factory and really rely on epicor to perform day-in day-out as it has in the past.

We urgently need help resolving this problem.

Is there some type logging to be able to determine what caused the Epicor to stop responding? On the Epicor Level? On the Progress Level?

We need help to get PET working on our Windows 2008 R2 Epicor Server. Currently, we have to run it on another server.

Regards,

Todd P. Bruggeman
Ed,

This is scary to hear! We are going to upgrade from Epicor 9.04.505c to
9.04.507 this weekend. I hope we can hear enough responses from the user
group to make up our minds to move forward with the upgrade or halt it.

unable to restart the database.

When this happens the Epicor administration console that is installed on
the Epicor Server will not load (it just thinks and never finishes)

As a result we have no choice but to reboot the server.

This has happened at least 6 times since the upgrade on 22 Apr 11 and
has been more frequent with the latest outage happening just 12 hours
after restarting the server (we rebooted at 2:00pm yesterday and it went
down around 2:00am this morning. We are a 24 hour, 7 days a week factory
and really rely on epicor to perform day-in day-out as it has in the
past.

We urgently need help resolving this problem.

Is there some type logging to be able to determine what caused the
Epicor to stop responding? On the Epicor Level? On the Progress Level?

We need help to get PET working on our Windows 2008 R2 Epicor Server.
Currently, we have to run it on another server.

Todd P. Bruggeman

Have any changes been made to the IP configuration of the server or any other
machines on the network that are trying to obtain the same IP?

This would cause the instability as they fight over the address. A remote of
the server would temporarily remedy the situation as on boot it would win the
election as to which machine gets the address.

The cycle would then continue.

I have seen this personally and would recommend checking the DHCP configuration
on the network to ensure exclusion are entered for the production server.

Below is a call our IT guy just posted to EPICweb. Actually, I think we all of a
sudden started to have stability issues about a month prior to migrating to
9.04.507a. Can anyone lend any insight?

TE No Servers Available

Epicor support,

Morton Manufacturing has had increasing Epicor and/or Progress stability issues
since upgrading from 9.04.506c to 9.04.507a on 22 Apr 2011. While other errors
are gone we are experiencing system down problems that we did not have before.

Epicor suddenly receive a message that indicates "No Servers are Available".

Apologies for the typographical error.

There is an "undocumented and unsupported" procedure to run PET on WS2008R2... look up Answerbook # 9635MPS on the support website. We're doing it here without any problems (so far...)

Good luck!

What are your Appserver Pool Settings? And what is the state of each
Appserver when this problem comes up?

That error generally shows up when there are no AppServers available due to
being in use, and you have maxed out the number of AppServers that are
possible to run.

Did you setup a "TEST" Server around the time your problems started happening ... ?

Did you do it in a Virtual Environment ?

Did you do a Physical to Virtual copy and then re-name your TEST Server ? LOTS of settings need to be updated besides ServerName.

I just wonder if you don't have 2 different Servers trying to access your Database on the LIVE Server .....

If you did create a TEST environment around the time your problems started, try turning that TEST Server OFF for a day and see what happens.

Look at your scheduled tasks, SC setup etc. Anything that runs automatically
or is able to make multiple connections to the BOs in parallel.

The most likely cause is either a scheduled task that is running more often
than it should be or not terminating correctly. If you have SC workflows
that are set to run in parallel mode, you can get this situation pretty
easily.

The "LOTS of settings need to be updated" bit below caught my eye. Is
there a list of these settings, to make sure I don't miss any? We're on
a VM, planning to clone the VM to set up a test system.

Thanks,

Brian.

Unless you put your clone on a separate network you will run into all sorts of trouble. Worst case being your production server no longer functions or cannot be accessed by any of your users. Epicor/Vantage freaks out if you change the name of the computer after it has been installed.
