Spool 32 errors

We have dual servers. We are testing 5.2 on the backup server. I have a
win98 box that faults in 5.1 with spool32 errors. Nothing seemed to work to
fix this. The system would crash hourly. The backup server with 5.2
developed an OS problem and I had to reformat and reload the machine. All
of my 5.1 icons failed to work even though they are named differently than
the 5.2 icons which were trashed while the server was down.

So, I reinstalled the 5.1 client on the problem machine. I reinstalled new
print drivers on both the client and the server. The machine ran flawlessly
for over a week. Right up to the point where I installed the 5.2 client.
Now the machine crashes over and over again.

The 5.1 and 5.2 clients point to different servers and different mapped
drives. The 5.2 client sure looks like the problem.

Any thoughts?

Just taking a shot in the dark... Check your vntgwork directory (or 5.1
equivilant) and windows Temp directory - if they have a lot in there, delete
everything in those directories, BUT DO NOT DELETE THE DIRECTORIES
THEMSELVES, and see if that makes any difference.

I had a similar problem, but only with Win98 pc's. I replaced the
spools.dll with the WinME version. Not one error since. You can
find it on the Internet.

Not sure if it will work for you since you have the same errors with
XP.

Just an idea.

I did as you suggested. It did not help. The pc has crashed three times
since then. Any other ideas? I'll start checking drivers and that sort of
thing but we have not changed anything lately to the best of my knowledge.
At least nothing anyone is admitting to....

You may have to update the crystal report enginee and the printer
drivers.

One suggestion was to replace the Win98se spoolss.dll with the WinME
version. This creates it's own problems with Microsoft Update but I am
willing to try it. I don't have a copy of ME. I have tried all of the
other fixes I could find at Microsoft support.

Will the Win2000 or WinXp spoolss.dll work instead? Can someone send me the
WinME dll?

Is there a "better" spooler to use? I really need to solve this problem!

before you try to change spoolers try this simple idea.
Go to your windows/spool/printers directory and delete everything (just
files not printers) reboot and see if it works better.

Thanks for the suggestion but the spoolss.dll is not available.

Any ideas if the Win2000 or WinXp versions will work? I hate to experiment
with an already unstable machine. Yes, I do own legal copies of both OS. I
just skipped the brain dead version Microsoft sold as ME.

This worked for me. Ten errors everyday over three months ago.

One since I replaced the spools.dll with the ME version.
