UPS Shipments

I have been reading this link with some interest. I have raised this idea at
various MN. user group meetings in the past in front of various Epicor
mucky-mucks. I would like to see the functionality expanded to the point of
importing the UPS charges into my A/R invoice as part of the get shipments
functions. Oh well back to wishing for summer to hurry up come to thaw us
out!!

Mike,
Good point. But if they gave you some bogess excuse like that then it is
probably not going to happen. They need to start somewhere then improve
upon it. So let's get started designing this:

I would first start with a scheduled upload of data that corresponded to a
scheduled export from Worldship following the end of the day processing.
You would have to include the packing slip number in Worldship as a refence
number to link it to the packing slip in Vantage. Verify the data and
transfer to an additional table. Then it would just be a matter of making
the table viewable in all related trackers and shipment screens. From this
view a button to track packages with a link to UPS's website for tracking
should not be too difficult. What about creating a link from the ship via
type to different websites for instances if the package shipped fedex it
would know from the shipvia that this was a fedex package and goto their
website to track it. Of course, these tracking numbers would be manually
inputted as could LTL carrier numbers. Give the software configuration
options, that is how you satify multiple companies with different ideas.
You don't tell them it can't be done.

Please feel free to run with this idea until we get to some common ground to
submit a enhancement request with teeth!

Mitchell,

I tried this in 1999. At Las Vegas Perspectives we gathered almost a dozen
users who wanted to have a some sort of interface between Vantage and UPS.
After all that interest Epicor's excuse not to do it was that each user had
their own idea what features to have or how it would function. It looks like
that before we submit anything to them, first we need to decide exactly what
we want. That way they cannot back up.
Right now we are using Visual Basic program that I wrote and "VB Form" to
interface Vantage with UPS. We can only export data from Vantage to UPS.
Then I wrote another program which tracks the shipments from UPS.
We are very much interested in using a standard feature in Vantage instead
of a combination of programs.

i'll sign up for that enhancement- we ship approx 90% via the ups
'worldship' software- we'd love to be able to pull up tracking info, etc.

Count us in on that enhancement request. I know it was on the cypress
update list but I don't think it made the cut. Worldship has some powerful
import/exporting functions built in and it was free. Think how strong the
import/export functions are in Vantage??? Maybe we should get the UPS
programmers to design the interface!!! ;-)

A Custom Mod may be a quicker solution, but you've got to look at the 'pain' of paying for each new release of Vantage to get the Mod upgraded, plus additional Maintenance Fees associated with the Mod (you pay Maintenance Fees based on 15% of the List price of all modules and mods that you have). If you can get enough support for an enhancement, that would be the best long-term way to go, even though you may not see it until 5.2 or 6.0 (or beyond?). I'm not sure how Maintenance Fees would impact this solution if you shared the Custom Mod with some other users. But be sure to check on that up front.

We really don't have a need for a UPS mod but I was just wondering why as a
collective you wouldn't choose to have a mod written by a third party. I
would think that there are enough Progress programmers on here that someone
would be interested in writing a mod. I have used Chris Robich to do some
work for me and was very satisfied. Of course there are upgrade issues but
I cant imagine that much would change between versions of Vantage or the UPS
Product. A simple test run before a go-live upgrade would let you know if
there are any serious upgrade problems. Having the source code would of
course ensure that your initial investment would not be lost in case of a
problem with any individual programmer. I'm sure an outside programmer
would be much cheaper then Epicor.

The capability to enter the UPS URL and tracking numbers exists in Vantage
5.1, however, there is a convenience issue. I'm including the response I
received from support regarding this issue - there is a further enhancement
request out there. The problem we have now is that our packing slips are
pulled and either because of source inspection or packaging or whatever the
invoices are created before the tracking numbers issued from UPS. This
causes us to be unable to USE this new feature, since once an invoice is
created, the packing slip can't be altered without deleting the invoice.

This feature would be perfect - if only we could enter the UPS tracking
number after the invoice is created. Once again, something is added and
made ineffective.

I complained to Vantage, and this is their reply. Please attach your name
to this enhancement if you think it is worthwhile.

Hi Lydia,

I have attached Call 775465MPS to the following Vantage Enhancement. I've
also relayed your specific concerns to my manager and to the Product
Development Manager. I will contact you with any response I receive from
either of those individuals.

---------------------------------------------
Summary JM Question about tracking shipments using URL capability
Book Vantage Enhancement Requests
Page 6718MPS

Customer does not get tracking number entered until next day - this causes a
problem because when you do a international shipment you need to send the
invoice at the same time.

In version 5.1 we now have the ability to track a shipment if the tracking
number has been entered on the packing slip. The tracking number needs to
be entered before the invoice gets processed. This is a problem for
international shipments because you need to send the invoice and the bill of
lading. Because not all customers use UPS or FEDX that give you your
tracking numbers immediately other shippers such as Yellow Freight may not
come until late at night and then the next morning the tracking numbers
would need to be entered on the packing slip. Because the invoice has
already been generated you can not go back to the packing slip and enter the
tracking number. The packing slip needs to be able to have the tracking
number entered after the invoice has been done.

RESPONSE FROM DEVELOPMENT:
Vantage is working as designed. Please track this call as a Clientele
enhancement request.

Mike,

Subject: [Vantage] UPS Shipments

We ship everything via UPS. Trying to interface their Worldship software
with Vantage has not been fun. Do enough of us use UPS to make a
enhancement request a viable alternative?

Please contact me if you would be interested in seeing Epicor work on this.
Obviously, a lot of us would have to be interested to make it feasible for
Epicor.

Would you be interested in sharing the costs of a custom mod?

Do you already have a solution to exchanging the data between the two?

I thought that this was an option on the last Survey? Do we know what
happened to it?

i hope i'm not asking some dumb questions...

we are on vantage 5.00.334 and there seems to be no epicor supported
interface with the ups worldship. has that changed at all for ver 5.1? a
basic enhancement for us would be being able to see the tracking number
(pulled in automatically from worldship) on the invoice tracker so we could
pass this on to our customers, via a courtesy phone call or quick maunal
email. an even better enhancement would be if the po#, maybe the part
number and quantity could be emailed automatically to our customer either
from vantage or worldship. worldship is pretty cool software (i'm the
backup, backup, worst case shipping manifest operator in our small company)
and it can email shipping notifications, but it can only send the pack-slip
number out with the tracking number which is not especially helpful to the
customer. vantage has gloabal alerts to automatically send emails, but
can't pull in a tracking number from worldship to the invoice tracker info.
this would be a great enhancement for us, as we use UPS for most shipments.
on demand automatic links to the UPS tracking web-site would be even better
(did i also mention i'd look pretty good driving a Ferrari to work instead
of the VW i currently own?).

our sales team has been very vocal asking for this enhancement. i'm more of
an accounting type, but what they are asking for seems like a pretty basic
customer service, with the essentials already in place in worldship and
vantage (weigh in here, technical types). if this is an enhancement that
would benefit many of us on the list, can i help organize the request to
epicor from those of us who would like to see it? i haven't had the
opportunity to request enhancements officially with epicor, but i'm willing
to start with this one if there is support out there. bob and mitchell, we
can discuss the cost sharing of a custom mod if epicor can't or won't
consider the request.
