Uses for Service Connect

Last November, we bought the full version, some training and a consulting engagement to prepare a routine to load detailed payroll records. We have not yet written one workflow that functions and we haven't taken delivery of the consultants' development.

I find it complex to use, very fussy and with little debug assistance. We are still impressed with what it might be able to do but disappointed by how steep the learning curve is.

Wondering what you are using Service Connect for? I know some of you mentioned using it for exporting/importing data and workflows, but what do the workflows accomplish and why else would one use it?

Thanks in Advance!

We use it for many things. Our number one application is integration with
our Agile system. We enter all of our parts and boms in Agile, then
release them to Vantage with ECOs through Service Connect. SC creates all
of the parts and boms in Vantage. We also use it for mass update of parts
- part classes, standard costs, waste/scrap factors, leadtimes, etc. It
saves many hours of manual input.

We have a Service Connect workflow for populating our order book on a weekly basis. It works great (downloads a CSV file from our main customer, enters it into Order Entry, does data validation), and was written for us by a third-party consulting group (who I would unfailingly recommend to anyone who wants more information offline).

Once management saw how well it worked, they got pretty excited about what it can do, meaning they'll actually consider purchasing the module (not just the runtime) and getting me trained how to write workflows. What I'd like to know is what kinds of things group members are using SC for, and whether or not they write them themselves or have outside help. I need to make a business case for the purchase price and training....

Thanks!

We are new users to Epicor - implemented 904 on Oct. 1. From day one we used Service Connect to feed in quality data/statistics being captured at different places throughout our mfg facility. We had one week of training from Epicor and no longer require their help when setting up new ones. We are also using it to assist with implementing additional companies into Epicor. We purchased the templates for this data load from Epicor. SC works very well.

We have the full blown version of service connect, but so far we only use it for EDI with the canned Epicor workflow. We were getting ready to use it to process shipto locations, but thanks to Brian's tip about the new Progress license, we now do this using 4gl Progress code. Much faster then Service Connect but potentially more dangerous since you can bypass BO rules.

Steve, can you share your experience about upgrading the Progress license?

It required me to basically reinstall OpenEdge from scratch and reapply all of the SPs/patches, at least in my test environment. The Epicor tech support guy had a somewhat simpler experience in his environment. I did get things working in my test environment once I completed the patching, but its made me a bit "Gunshy" about applying this to my production environment as I haven't needed to use the feature yet (I came up with a simpler approach that didn't require creation of records in a UD table).

I had to uninstall and reinstall OpenEdge to my test server, But this was just to get the Progress.cfg file which contains all the license information. Once I had this, I restored a copy of my original OpenEdge files to the directory and then just overwrote the Progress.cfg file with my new one. I did this to see if it would work, and it did. So that night I shut down processes and databases on my production server and killed the AdminService for OpenEdge 10.1B.  I then overwrote the Progress.cfg file with the new one and then restarted everything. It worked like a charm.

Besides some testing, I have only one BPM that uses it so far. It is for when an EDI order is processed in Demand Entry. It checks the ShipTo table for the Customer, and if the shipto address doesn't exist, it creates one and then set the Sales Order to the proper ShipTo ID. We were planning on paying a consultant to do the same thing in Service Connect before I found out about this new license. I am much better at 4GL and VB code then I am at creating a Service Connect Workflow.
Â
Â
ONE WARNING: Use the OpenEdge Config utility to list/print all your OpenEdge licenses before updating your server. I found one license that was on my production server that was NOT on my printed list of licenses.
