V8.03 - Execute Product Configurator in places other than quote

Someone else on this list suggested a slightly different route a while ago. He
didn't use the smart-string capability in the configurator but created an
input field, made it zero length (to hide it from view) and then built the
string by calling a routine from every input field's on-leave event. He then
had the whole string in an input field which could be set to the parts
description or another field.

Maybe this idea can work for you as well.

We are planning on using the product configurator to generate smart
part numbers and descriptions. We can currently execute the product
configurator on the quote/opportunity or sales order screen.
However, we desire to execute it in the Engineering Workbench and
perhaps other places (e.g. - we are in the middle of engineering a
part, and would like to use the product configurator to come up with
a part number to represent the material that we need to purchase in
order to manufacture the item). The on-line help says:

"The smart string is used only if the configuration is defined in
Quote Entry or Order Entry. If it is defined in Job Entry, the smart
string is never created"

What I envision is the ability to add a small front-end that would
prompt for a part number (where the rules are stored) and which in
turn would bring up the product configurator input screen which would
allow the user to enter the parameters and get the smart string back -
and perhaps add it to the part master if it is not already there.
This "front-end" would be executed via a menu option or a shortcut -
in other words, it would always be available in the system.

Has anyone done anything like this or can you provide me a push in
the right direction?

We are currently in the process of Conference Room Pilot and are
planning on implementing Vantage 8.03 during the summer.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Hi Pete,

I can't be of too much help, but only to tell you that what you're looking to do simply isn't available in the core Vantage product, unless you talk to the custom coding department at Epicor. We've had quite a time with our Product Configurator development, as you may remember when you spoke to Ron. We went through 5 months of custom coding to be able to have access to "Get Details" on a configured part via Quote/Order/Job.

Unless someone here somes up with an alternative for you, I would suggest calling custom coding.

Good Luck!

Very curious to hear if you solved this problem- we have the same one
(going live this spring). Our current plan is to generate
smartstrings from the engineering process by having a
standing "internal" quote and simply having the engineers jump out to
the quote, run the configurator to get the string, and then using
that part number and details. Not great, but possibly servicable?
