Vantage 5.2 log in error on Win95 stations

Just for everyone's information and anyone else that has run into this log
in error below while trying to run Win95 with Vantage 5.2, I was able to
resolve the problem by installing Winsock 2.0 (downloaded from the link
below) on these PC's but it had to be installed on the client before I
installed the Vantage client. From the testing I've done, Vantage 5.2 now
seems to run fine on these Win95 stations so I guess we'll see ....

We have a test environment set up for Vantage 5.2 (currently on 4.0) and
plan to upgrade to 5.2 over the holidays. We've been doing most of our
testing to date on Win2000 stations. I've now tried to load several win95
clients with Vantage 5.2 and each station is able to log on but after the
user id and password is entered, they are all getting the error 'Could not
load DLL procedure Ws2_32.dll (3258).' I found the ws2_32.dll on the Vantage
server and copied it over to the clients, windows and windows system
directory but still get the error. From the look of message, it looks like
it's trying to load it somewhere anyway, not find it. From the little I've
worked with it, Vantage still seems to run fine from these stations but I'd
like to get rid of that error. Has anyone run into this before?

Yes, Vantage 5.2 is no longer able to run (well run without error) on
Windows 95 client machines. 95 is no longer supported from Vantage 5.2. We
have a couple machines left on 95, but not much longer. 95 is no longer
worth our time to keep running.

I suggest upgrading off this platform since Microsoft plus another slew of
companies will no longer support this product as was done with Windows 3.11
back in the day.

However, you can stay on 95 and just live with the errors and problematic
functionality or stay running with older software that was built for Windows
95.

Sorry for the bad news on this end, hopefully someone else found a way to
fix it.

I am seeing exactly the same situation. At Perspectives Ben Nixon stated
Win-95 would not work on 5.2 but so far it seems to work after ignoring the
error. Once in awhile the PC freezes but that may be just the fact that the
Win-95 machines are the oldest in the building. We have at most maybe 2
clients on Win-95 so my plan is to just upgrade as soon as possible.

Hello Todd,

I have not yet moved to 5.2 and the fact that it will not run on Win 95
concerns me. We are running in a mixed OS mode with several 95 clients.
Searching the Microsoft K.B I found the following article

wondering if it pertained to this problem your seeing on your 95 clients?

Tim,

As learned at the Perspectives conference. Version 5.2 is not supported for
the Win95 OS. As per Ben Nixon, Epicor Support, if you can live with being
presented with the DLL error each time you log on the version 5.2 client
should still work.

Interesting, maybe there is a tangent relation to that article. The Winsock
2.0 part may be the key part if the machines getting the error (can't find
ws2_32.dll) are running winsock1.1 (as an older Win-95 machine might be).
Just making the .dll available might not be enough since the rest of winsock
2.0 might not be there to "call" it. I wonder if you can retroactively
install winsock 2.0 on a Win-95 machine. Perhaps loading a newer version if
IE (like IE 6) would do this? Can you run IE 6 on a 95 machine? Might be
something worth trying. In the long run the problem will go away for us
when we convert all our PCs to Win2K in 2003.
Thanks,
-Todd

Guessing from the name, that DLL sounds like part of winSock (windows
sockets.) Do you have all the [many dozens!] of Win95 patches
loaded? One of them was "Win Sock 2", available by itself or with one of
the Dial Up Networking upgrades. This had a lot of bug & performance
fixes, and also let Win95 run some network programs that originally only
worked on '98. Consider it mandatory on any Win95 machines you're still
running.

I kept quite a few Win95 PCs running well after 98 was out, since I've
always despised the pathetic performance of 98. Even just 3 years ago on a
"fast" machine, Win98 was dog slow, compared to a well configured 95
one. 98 was a heck of a lot easier to set up, however.

I finally found a great "fix" for Win98: Lite
98 http://www.litepc.com/98lite.html this utility will strip out much of
98's bloat and make any system run faster. It even pares it down enough to
run adequately on old slow 32MB Pentium systems.

So if you're still running 95 just to keep older systems in service, you
should check this out! It can also get rid of IE and other junk you may
not want on business or shop systems. Note - you still need a Win98
license to run this - it modifies the Win98 installation - it's NOT a stand
alone O/S!

I suppose if you have it set-up, these would run fine through a Terminal

Hey Tim,

I was told during the conference that Vantage 5.2 would only run on Win98
and
above workstations. Bummer for us since we have lots of old beater data
collection workstations still at Win95.

If you can find a way to make it work I would definitely be interested in

Thanks to everyone that responded to this. The fact that Win95 wasn't
supported in Vantage 5.2 came as a surprise to me given that this was the
first I heard of it but I guess now when I read the 5.10 - 5.20 installation
guide it does not list Win95 as a supported client. I'll let everyone know
if we figure fix the log in error but it sounds a little shaky trying to run
Win95 anyway since Epicor does not support it so we will probably either end
up upgrading all of these clients (about 50) or may end up running all of
them using terminal server which will probably be cheaper and definitely
would be easier to manage. Thanks again.

I went to Microsoft's site and found the Windows Socket 2 update and
applied it on one of the win95 stations that was receiving the error message
but no luck. Now I'm unable to even get to the vantage log on this station.
I also searched for information on the MS site for ws2_32.dll and found
nothing related to win95 for it. In fact the description of it Windows
Socket 2.0 32-Bit DLL so I'm guessing I can forget it about it working with
Win95. Thanks anyway.

Note - you still need a Win98
license to run this - it modifies the Win98 installation - it's NOT a stand
alone O/S!

Dang, sorry to hear that. I wouldn't have suggested it if I though it was
risky. I've loaded it on dozens of Win95 PCs, many with Vantage, and had
no troubles with it.

Have you tried basic windows network trouble shooting, like pings or name
lookup? Can you see the server or get to the mapped drive letter? Rarely,
win95's networking would go out to lunch and removing all the networking
components via the control panel, rebooting, then adding them back and
reconfiguring would correct things.
