Vantage - Bar coding / data collection

You do not have to use the TT5's to use bar-codes. In fact,
a bar code reader connected to a PC does the job much better.
Also, you can then give the option of mouse/keyboard/bar scanner
to the user. The biggest drawback to using data collection is
the discipline that is required to get good data.
Just my two cents!

In order to use bar coding, do we have to purchase the epicor data
collection license? Is this our only option? What kind of feedback can you
give me on the success/failures of using this? Thank you.

Amy,

We bought Vantage with the intent to use bar code labor data
collection. We started by using it for time and attendance, planning
to move forward when we figured out the system better and got the
hardware and software stabilized. That was 16 months ago, and as yet
we are still only on time and attendance. Stability has been a
constant issue. The collection gateway (which operates the bar code
collection units) goes down 4 to 10 times a week, usually at shift
change time. I am seriously considering going back to punch clocks.
Bar coding appears to be used by very few Vantage customers, at least
Epicor's package. Perhaps there are some having success with third
party add-ons.

I would recommend staying away from Vantage's bar code module for now.

Remember, there are two types of data collection in Vantage.
The barcode solution Jeff is speaking of is the type that uses a device
called a TT5 for data input. This is a small device with a 32-character LCD
display that prompts you for inputs.

The second type is Vantage Point Data Collection that uses regular pc's as
terminals. They act like regular vantage licenses, but they only give you
access to the data collection interface in Vantage. Bar code wands or laser
scanners can also be used with this interface.

You can do time and attendance, as well as job costing through both types of
data collection.

You can always contact your Customer Account Manage directly if you would
like to discuss your options in more detail.
