Vantage Business Objects - Guidance & Documentation

I know that Epicor is not Microsoft but every object model that
Microsoft makes available is fully documented in a help file that makes
it a snap to start using.

I know that creating this type of documentation can be daunting and
probably requires dedicated staff but one of the reasons we chose
Vantage over the competition is that fact that they pushed the point of
being able to do in house customization and coding. You would think that
they would have provided this type of documentation when they make it a
point to boast this feature.

Has anyone contacted Epicor to file this complaint?

If not, we should rally and make our voices hear.

Thank you Mark!

I do not understand why the company did not offer this document to us
when we bagan. I wonder how many people out there need this doc and
how many lifetimes of hours have been wasted because of a companies
inability to identify their own documentation? We have spent 3 weeks
searching and asking them for this.

This group rocks!

I can't wait to get a look at this document!

Hi,

We are doing an implementation of Vantage v400 with Service Connect
and are looking for documentation on the business objects. We are
not going to be using the web services (unless required for
operations in Service Connect) because they sound to be very slow.

We have spoken with numerous sales and technical resources within
their organization to try and locate documentation that will give us
the purpose and methods within each object.

There response was to:
1. Direct us to the very basic documentation for web services and
business objects, which only tell how to install them, test them,
customize them or give an example of how to call them
2. Direct us to the web services so we could look at the
documentation created within code (useless because not fully
commented and web services sound very slow)
3. Tell us to turn on tracing in the client app to watch what happens
when we perform tasks within, basically creating our own
documentation.

Because of the size of this application and its customer base I
cannot believe that there is not better documentation. How could you
create such a large application and have so many people implement it
without offering even reasonable documentation?

Any information you may have on Documentation would be greatly
appreciated. Help, pointing in the right direction, Trials and
tribulations, Warnings on any information that would help us in
implementation would be great to hear about.

Regards,
Troy C.

It's under Order Management, Workforce. You may also have to look under
Role Code. I know they are interrelated especially when you have CRM!

Troy,

I am in the same situation as you do and I can't agree
more with you on this.

I am using Vantage 8.0.3, and am trying to create a
web front for certain modules (quote, order) of
Vantage, I am solely relying on Business Object to
talk to the Vantage system.

I got pretty much the same response, the Vantage
documentation is inadaquate, to say the least. Even
in this group, there is not a lot of discussion about
the the implementation (coding) side of the Vantage.

Hi

Totally agree

What you can use is the "BL Tester" program, this program used to be in the SDK but I think you can ask Epicor for it (is version specific)

With this program you can open any BO (DLL file) an see and run all the methods it has, it wont tell you what it does, but at least you can see all parameters necessary to run each method and makes much easier the development

You can also do this with Visual Studio. If you create a project, add the
particular .BO and .IF DLLs to your project then you can create use the Object
Browser to get a somewhat decent explanation of the parameters. I always use
this in conjunction to a Trace dump to see what objects the UI is calling, in
what order, and with what values in the parameters.

Troy-

You have to order it from Epicor...it was around $150 but well worth the
money. It's about 2 inches thick, full of pictures, procedures,
examples, etc etc. It gets into the coding pretty deep.

I am still waiting for mine. I ordered it and they sent me five
useless user guides instead. I am really hoping this is as good as
everone says.

Troy,

The guide is better than the anemic help files included with the system - but much of it is straight regurgitation of those files.

A few more 'real world' examples included (good) but you'd think they'd have hundreds they could share with users by now.

Disappointed at the continued nickel-dime to death treatment of customers. (Why should we pay an additional $150 for 1 manual that simply describes the .NET customization functionality that is one of the sole selling points of Vantage - since it certainly isn't the inherent functionality?).

Pay for extra manuals... sure. The 1st one? No way is that treating your existing customers well.
