Vendor access

Well, you could force all your vendors to send you quotes in a format that
could be imported via a progress 4gl program. This would require a means of
auditing the electronic file they send you.

You could setup a remote login to your system, accessible by all vendors,
and give vendors a vantage password and login, educate them on the inner
workings of the quote module. This could create serious security concerns,
and would definitely present some significant network upgrade costs, and
additional vantage licenses.

OR you could hire a custom progress programmer to set up a web interface so
they could do the quote entry online. This is the most secure, hands off
approach, except you need to hire someone to audit the quotes they enter
into the system.

Forcing vendors to enter their own quotes into the system, or requiring them
to send you quotes in a proprietary format is not the most common of
business practices, and may not be practical for a certain percentage of
vendors. not all sales reps have the capability of logging into remote
systems or surfing the web.

I guess you could e-mail them a BOM export in excel for all the parts you
purchase from them, and have them enter their price, then import the
standard costs into vantage using a custom import 4GL program, though I
don't know if costing info part of that import utility. You would have to
verify that all vendors have microsoft excel on their worstations.

In each of the above scenarios you are essentially asking the vendor to do
data entry for you.

My hunch is that an in house data entry clerk is more cost effective,
reliable, tried and proven solution than anything I can think of.

Unfortunately, data coming in from outside the company must usually be
imported into the database through good 'ol manual data entry, unless the
two businesses have a chance to sit down and discuss electronic data
transfer, and how the two company's databases will be integrated, taking
into account multiple operating system platforms, differing data formats,
etc...

However, a business can save time and money by developing solutions that try
as much as possible to make sure that once data is created by one employee
in the company, that data can be reused by other employees without manually
having to recreate it.

Subject: [Vantage] Vendor access

Does anyone know of a way for a Vendor to access a quote for a BOM in
Vantage to enter pricing into the system. We need a way to eliminate
entering the data manually after a quote is received. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jarrod
